Cliff Notes:
Interview was ~ 25 minutes. CJH was very personable which is a refreshing change from previous coaches. You could tell he and DM were friends and had a mutual respect for each other.
- 14 early enrollees are in the program and it is the first time he has had no issues with an early enrollee. The ee’s are following the lead of the veteran players and learning what are the expectations. Specifically mentioned the young dl was working with the veterans when he was leaving late one night.
- Currently in 4 weeks of S&C and spring practice will start in earlyMarch after team returns from spring break
Recruiting
- Was behind last year as the first time they could get out and recruit was in the fall due to covid restrictions. Wants to recruit the right way and develop relationships with in state coaches. 5 assistant coaches have responsibility for the state.
- Long term expects to have balanced classes and use the transfer portal to address specific needs. Used the portal last year after spring practice to address needs. I got the impression this will be done again. No mention of numbers.
- State will be a focus for the 22 and 23 classes and specifically mentioned the 2 instate players in this year’s class. Stressed the state is important to the program.
- Recruiting has changed as the HC used to be “closers” but now they have to be engaged upfront due to 1) social media and 2) official visits are occurring in spring/summer prior to senior year. Stated recruiting is 365 days a year. Likes recruiting QB’s as it is easier for them to transition to other positions as they are typically better athletes and understand the game. DM mentioned AT and Theo Jackson as examples of this.
Staff
- Easier transition for the offensive staff last year as they had worked together (except rb coach) and knew CJH expectations/scheme.
- Defense staff was behind as they had to learn each other and learn what are expectations. Complimentary of the staff as they have focused on improving techniques, eliminating mental busts, and being multiple on D. Spoke highly of the staff and likes Coach Banks aggressiveness.
- No staff turnover except for a few ga’s/analysts who moved for growth opportunities. Staff continuity is critical as the players know what to expect and the coaches understand the players.
- CJH and positional coaches went to the Senior Bowl to connect with the players (VJJ, AT, CM) and helps with the kids transition to the pro game. Will put their learnings to use for the UT Pro day to make it more productive for the players. I also got the impression they want to learn from the NFL staff and scouts as well.
CJH was very proud that last spring and this fall the football team had the
highest GPA ever. He and his staff want to teach skills and accountability that can be used outside and on the playing field. DM mentioned Mathew Butler and CJH said MB will be successful in whatever he undertakes. First I recall a HC stressing the importance and aligns with CRB approach in basketball.
