I've been out of commission for three days with a trip to the ER for a kidney stone and (eventually) surgery to remove it. You guys are still beating this NBA GOAT discussion to death.
It's all opinion man. Anybody who frames their opinion as fact is foolish. I started watching NBA basketball in 1977. My favorite players were Dr. J and Bernard King. I saw the Bird/Magic transformation and Jordan's impact. I lived through the boring-ass Detroit Piston years of the late 80's and early 90's and saw Shaq as a skinny rookie. There were some really really great, dominate players through the years.
I like the NBA. It's a fun product to watch. But comparing players across generations who played different positions is crazy. Jordan was a transformational player. But so was Bird. And Lebron. And Shaq. And Kareem. All great players and all worthy of Goat consideration -- depending on your favorite team and alliances.
Also, don't sell me this 'He's a bad person' argument when talking about Lebron. NBA players are notoriously bad human beings. Jordan is a philandering *******. Same for Bird and Kareem. I think Barkley bet on games he played in. And all of the screwed every girl they could find in every city they stopped. None of them are angels so let's drop that crap.
I was just talking with my brother about this topic. I told him to forget all of this Goat BS. I framed it like this: Who are the players who's size/skill set/drive/whatever is/was so unique, you'd have to create them from scratch (ii.e there just aren't any players like them)? I came up with Bird, Lebron, and Magic. I was on the fence with Curry. He's such a great shooter, there's nobody ever with his range and stats. But there have been lots of great shooters in history. He just happens to be the best. Jordan doesn't weigh into this assessment, either. There were lots of 'Jordans' before and after him (Dr J, David Thompson, Clyde Drexler, Dwayne Wade, yada yada yada). He just happened to be the best.
My brother had an interesting player who may get there if his career holds out --- the Greek Freak. His size/skill combination is ridiculous.
