Not sure when it became normal in America. I'm 38 and I've known it's not cool to call a person Oriental since I was a kid. Didn't realize people weren't aware of this until today on VN. Kind of surprised TBH.

Ugh really?!? The fact you could even ask that makes me cringe. And I’m white. Imagine how it would make a person of color or an orie.... Asian feel?

Lol. I was just playing. I try not to call people anything except people. We are all the same on the inside and that's really all that matters IYAM.

So old white dudes = racist, pretty much by default, because young people who've been adults for 15 or 20 minutes deem our language to be archaic and insensitive.

Might wanna give the NAACP or the UNCF a call. They seemed to have missed the mandate.

How do you know what part of ASIA someone is from??? It’s a massive continent.

Don't know man, I'm not the expert on this subject. All I know is that calling someone Oriental is offensive and has been for decades. Rugs = oriental. People = Asian.

Russia is so big it is technically on two continents. People is western Russia have more genetic similarities with Europeans, while eastern Russians have more Asian genetics. It was funny until I had to explain it! Lol :)

So if I said the orient, would you have a general idea where that is?

The ORIENT is a MUCH smaller place than ASIA. If I call someone ASIAN, they could be from Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey..... do people generally refer to those people as “Asians”? The orient narrows it down just a bit. I fail to see how that is offensive. Is it offensive to call someone nordish?

I don’t want to be referred to as southern anymore, only North American.

Southern = comfort food
North American = people
