A followup - I think maybe based on the spring, if Kennedy had to come off the field (assuming he starts), Ryan Johnson would slide over to center and someone else would hve to take his spot at guard - if Ryan ends up starting there.

I’m not very optimistic that Hall will be ready to start week 1.

I’m thinking something like this:

LT - T. Smith, Tatum
LG - R. Johnson, Hall
C - Kennedy
RG - Locklear, Carvin
RT - Richmond, Tatum

I think Tatum or Hall is first one off the bench if a Tackle goes down. Carvin or Hall if a guard goes down. If Kennedy goes down I see R. Johnson or Locklear sliding over then insert Carvin or Hall at guard. Past those 8 guys, Calbert looks the part and hopefully J. Johnson will be able to provide some depth. Hoping we don’t have to dig any deeper than that.

True, but we did score 26 in that awful offensive system against KY. That’s about the caliber of defense we’ll face imo.

We also scored only 17 against Missouri who was the worst defensive team on our SEC schedule.

Helton has his work cut out for him this year imo. We should see a heavy dose of the power run game.

Well, we were dead last in the SEC in ypg and ppg. We were last in ypg by a very large margin.

It’s not unreasonable to think that.

It can change pretty fast.

We went from #10 in 2011 to #4 in 2012 in scoring.
From #10 in 2014 we ended up at #3 in 2015 with a new OC.
There are other examples but its human nature to fall prey to the anchoring (recency) bias.

Florida is in the same boat as us and Mullen expects an immediate surge in his team's production due solely to his bringing his S&C coach with him from MSU.

This. I don't blame media guys for projecting us to be so bad. It really doesn't matter what they project. Everything will be different this year, so I don't know why we would expect the same results from last year.

It can change and hopefully it will.

That being said, the original point you made was the media doesn’t think we can score on air. I was pointing out it wasn’t unreasonable that they thought the way they did due to how bad we were last year and having many of the same questions we ended last year with. The QB position is a huge question mark right now. If we even get average QB play I think we’ll see improvement.

Jump up to middle of the pack in scoring this year it will be an absolute success on the offensive side.

No. I really have no idea until Fingers brings the practice reports from fall camp. I was just trying to show that WVU's guys from an on paper talent perspective would likely be our 4th string - if they could beat out our walkons. :)

They're lower rated as prospects, but they all have 3 years or more of strength and conditioning training behind them. We may not have recruited any of them, but they could still be solid based upon experience, scheme and strength.

You all should watch WVU's bowl game from this past year. They were destroyed by a 6-6 Utah team. There is a point in the video where WVU drops 9 and 3rd and 8 and a receiver is still wide open somehow. Unless the offensive staff is completely incompetent, we should be able to score some points.

I know you're just talking about the D, but wasn't Grier also out in that game?

well, that and we haven't met pre season expectations at all the last 10 years.

why start now?:)

More on why I agree it is likely to change:

I don’t know who our starting QB will be nor do I know who our starting RB will be. I think Chryst was brought in to compete for the job and if he can win it so be it. As much as anything else it could be that the purpose is to kick Guarantano in the ass and make it clear that he either produce on hit the bench. I think the same can be said about Ty Chandler and Madre London. If you want the carries you’re going to have to earn them. In both cases I think that improves our offensive production. I think the return of Jennings also improves our offensive production. I think having an older offensive line improves our production. Wood-Anderson should give us another piece of the puzzle.

I like our offensive talent at all positions. No we’re not Bama but we’re pretty solid and we don’t really have to play any teenagers on offense this year except for Trey but no one is going to complain about that. What I’m looking to find out is what can Helton get installed before we head to Charlotte and how is he as a solo play caller?

I don’t know who is going to start at the corners but I think Pruitt wanted more athletic competition there and that’s why Alontae and Bryce are starting out there. Osborne, Buchanan, etc. had better get their butts in gear if they want to see the field. Jmo.

Think about it. Without Chryst, Guarantano has no competition and Ty may be convinced that Jordan and Coleman would never be able to overtake him as the presumed starter.

That’s just what I’ve been thinking. Pruitt is pulling out as many stops as possible to manufacture as much immediate competition as he can every where he can.

Danielson siad a lot of our players were soft under the prior regime. I think some may have gotten comfortable losing and that has to either get corrected or they need to be benched. Pruitt can do that. Butch, apparently not.

Part of the 247 newcomer updates that I didn't see posted was Emerson appears to be well behind where he needs to be if he wants to contribute this season.

George apparently shows the ability but is raw.

Besides that it was a lot of positive stuff that Ron posted in player threads. Sounds like we got some ball hawks in the freshman secondary class

Could you go into detail about Emerson?

I’m guessing moving to the OL during spring didn’t help him much.

Could he be a RS candidate? Time will tell

They were missing a ton of players due to injury. KSU game is a better watch. KSU is a small but well coached team and they ran all over WVU. Grier got lucky and shook off several would be sacks because the he was as big as their dlinemen. I also noticed blitzing really throws him off (not just in the KSU game).

That was the first game of theirs I watched and realized if we run the ball 40+ times and make a few plays on defense then we will win.

Ga’s recruiting is ridiculous. Signed 7 five stars last year. Already have 3 this year and have crystal balls today for 2 more. Now we’ll play the two most talented teams in the country every year and, unfortunately for us, Richt isn’t coaching them anymore. They’re not soft anymore.

If we’re going to compete at that level, we’ll have to recruit close to that level, or Ga will own the east for the foreseeable future.

Would love to see Pruitt steal their best recruiter.
Tell Fulmer that we need to open the vault to get him.

I look at it more as they will have to play us every year. :)
