With the news of Alabama OC Mike Locksley to Maryland, many national people have shifted their eyes on Hugh Freeze to a possible marriage with the Crimson Tide. Throughout today, sources have told Volquest that Freeze to Tennessee is not dead. However, it hasn’t gained any momentum either. The question on the minds of many/most is where would/will Pruitt go if Freeze is not going to happen?
Freeze to Alabama would make a lot of sense. We know Nick Saban wanted him a year ago as an analyst. We know Freeze wants to be a Power 5 head coach again as soon as possible. Being at Bama and working with the high profile and very talented offense would seem to be a fast track back to being a head coach with success there. Especially compared to an opportunity at Liberty.
Dan Enous has been a name we have mentioned, but no one seems sure of how much mutual interest there is or would be there. NC State OC Eliah Drinkwitz is another name that’s been mentioned and he could be a guy that Pruitt could shift his focus to. He is a QB’s coach as well.
Other names? That’s the million dollar question. If Matt Canada isn’t retained at Maryland it would make sense to call him. Why not? He has SEC experience and was very well-regarded just two years ago.
Would a guy like Larry Fedora be interested? He’s obviously looking for a job and landing a head coaching gig does seem doubtful. However, Fedora has never been a QB coach. The other issue with Fedora is that he doesn’t have a great rep in the state of North Carolina — a state Tennessee is working hard to plant a flag in recruiting. For Pruitt, that could mean he would have no interest in him. No source has told me that Pruitt does have any interest as of right now.
One other name that’s floated through the SEC this evening is Mike Yurcich at Oklahoma State. He’s been linked by some to the Auburn job today, but would Pruitt have interest? Is that the style he wants to play and how well does a Big 12 offense translate in the SEC where defense is actually played? I don’t know. Yurcich is a QB’s coach though.
Right now, we don’t know of any scheduled talks with any other candidates at this point. But if the board does end up getting reset there’s obviously going to be some new names coming from somewhere.
If there are any NFL names that Pruitt would have interest in, then the timeline would be pushed back till after Christmas.
