Before Pearl I don't ever recall UT fans expecting much of anything from basketball. I honestly can't recall many UT basketball fans period, Bruce managed to awaken the fanbase.
I mean let's all be honest, UT was a 2 sport juggernaut football & Lady Vols Basketball. But we only made 2 NCAA tournaments in the 90s. Wade Houston was awful even with his son being one of our greatest players, never hit 20 wins. Kevin O'Neill was terrible as well. They hired a solid guy in Jerry Green and despite taking us going to 4 straight NCAAs he got let go. Buzz was then terrible and finally we had a legit winner in Pearl.
Sorry -- I interjected my comment into a BB convo. I wasn't really commenting on specific sports per se-- more the general mindset of the fanbase, which tends to permeate all sports to some degree. UT fans are a beaten-down lot. UGA and Auburn fans would think they could win the Kentucky Derby with a mule. UT fans would be formulating reasons we could lose with a Secretariat clone.
As far as BB, the general consensus is this is a F4 team. It's a reasonable expectation. It wouldn't be overachieving-- it would be achieving at a level commensurate with this team's ability. Would not achieving it mean the season is a failure? No. Would it be a disappointment? Sure. But IDT it would change how much most fans appreciate this team's many accomplishments, efforts and success. And it should elevate our expectations for future teams.
