I used to read every practice nugget. But after years of showing these clowns have no idea what they are talking about, I dont even stop my scrolling for them.
It's all in how you read the reports.
So I read that the offensive line run blocking has apparently improved quite a bit, at least against our defensive front seven this spring. The takeaway seems to be that the combination of either Banks or Chandler with our OLine is a strength of our offense. Both of those running backs have flashed in the past. I’m assuming the defense didn’t have any trouble shutting down the other running backs. I can’t say that I'm really all that surprised.
Pass protection seems to have improved but so has our pass rush. Both quarterbacks may be erring on the side of adding aggressiveness, trying to make plays. One might argue that could work out better than being too timid to even attempt to make a play.
When the team is playing against itself it’s difficult to read a lot into the observations of non-football types. It’ll be interesting to hear Pruitt’s assessment on Tuesday after practice. My guess is he’s going to find something, anything really, to be unsatisfied with. I sort of like that about him.
Given the praise for our safeties and cornerbacks, I’m wondering who Guarantano was burning with touchdown passes.
I was a bit surprised in not seeing Jahmir Johnson’s name mentioned with the offensive linemen but he could be banged up. Or it could be that we’re using the precious few reps available to get Morris up to speed. Given that we need 3 centers going into the season I’m not surprised to see Carvin getting reps in that role. Maybe the reason Ryan is on his left is to help him with the calls. After all, from all the practice reports I’ve ever seen Carvin has only ever had 2 practices where he was in the center on the line. Talk about trial by fire. I guess we all know what Carvin will be doing with any free time this summer.
I think the best way to read practice reports in the spring and early fall is to remember that it's all about developing players and building depth. I fully understand that we're not really used to that around here so one has to be a bit forgiving toward members of the reporting class. They may have never seen this stuff before. jmo.
