Maybe, but as it stands I'm not sure we have much of a choice lol.

A lot will depend on how winning 8 or 9 games will be perceived... In year 3 or 4.

Of course, there's still going to be opportunities for this team this year and next to take steps... Maybe some big steps. We'll see.

To me, the scorecard is more about competing with rivals and contending for championships than winning a certain number of games that include cupcakes we pay to beat. IDT it should take five years to be contending for the division, but you're right-- fans can't control that. I just think pleas for patience are going to fall on ears tired of hearing it. But I'm still optimistic that this staff, their ability to find and develop talent, and the players they're bringing in should have us competitive with UGA and UF in Year 3 or 4-- maybe not winning consistently, but competitive enough for the games to be toss-ups. Even thinking about winning the SEC comes after that.

Yeah I think the fly in the ointment there is the development.

That takes time. How much? No idea, a lot goes into answering that.

But they'll find themselves in games in the not too distant future that could be program changing, culture setting Type games.

Butch did, but failed to take advantage.

We'll see how this staff does when in similar situations.

I mean think about how the dynamic changes for him if he closes ou and uf in 2015?

Anyway, the expectations don't change.. Agree.

Edit... As for competing with rivals I think it would be important to beat any of the three, soon, should the door be opened to do so. Especially Florida. Of the three, they're the ones closest to us on the totem pole....

Absolutely.
Never was going to be 2 years.
Clemson, Bama GA, running the show and the NCAA ain't gonna do sht about it.

Meanwhile we were getting curb stomped by Vandy and Mizzou. This is a complete rebuild and always was.

Some seem surprised daily about the elite absolutely owning recruiting, while we scratch and claw for a few studs.
So I guess I'm glad for lower expectations.

If the last decade didn't happen, but "if" isn't worth a damn.

Goals - not getting embarrassed by Vandy.
Followed by getting back above mediocre Mizzou and SC.
And THEN eye the top.
Fans will gripe and develop apathy but I guarantee they'll jump right back in when the bigger wins roll around.

Best just to enjoy the ride, not sweat what we can't control and have a little fun along the way. Because all the complaining or "demanding" in the world, ain't gonna change a thing.

I’ve always been of the opinion that if we are not competing for titles, then the next most important thing in a football season is how you do against your rivals. There are three games that matter every year in that regard, and that three doesn’t include Vandy or UK. Doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy winning or watching those games too, but I’m never going to use those as a benchmark or indicator of success.

While I agree... Comparing us to those 3, well 2 of them anyway, isn't where we are as peers right now.

Losing to vandy, USCe and Mo as often as we do to the big three is.

For now... Progress would be victories over the former 3...

I agree. I watch, and will continue to watch what happens, and always have hope. I, like you and a few, have seen the ups and downs in the program over the years. I’ve seen something different in CJP than the before coaching carousel we’ve witnessed. This is different, and I’m sticking to that.

No argument that we aren’t close. But to LA Vol’s point on patience, it’s all spent after the past ten years of being coached by the cast of Dinner for Schmucks. There’s no more benefit of the doubt from me. I’m skeptical of this or any future coach until he gives me a reason to not be. And progress against basketball or bowling schools just isn’t it anymore. It’s nothing personal against Pruitt, I hope he’s the one who does it.

He didn't create this mess, he's supposed to fix it.

I just think the fix is gonna take longer than we want.

So at what point does patience really go out the window with this staff knowing what a mess they inherited, and that it's not going as fast as we want? Rhetorical... It'll be different for everybody.

That's how most fans will treat the situation. But as far as being given time, as long as he trends upward, he'll get the time he needs from UT.
And even the majority of those that lose patience if it doesn't happen fast enough, will show back up as soon as we're back in it with our main rivals. All based on *if he can do it, of course.

Butch was supposed to fix Dooleys mess, Dooley was supposed to fix Kiffin’s mess, Kiffin was supposed to fix Fulmer’s ambivalent Recruiting in his last years.

That part is a fact of life in coaching changes. It’s what they sign up for, and are well compensated for it.
