Attendance, ticket sales and donations have been declining for several years. Stadium renovations have been scaled back and refocused on safety and infrastructure. The Vol Pass has been a flop for football. The Summer of Smokey has not been well-received. There's a "wait and see" feel around the program right now.
A good September creates excitement and buzz. A lackluster September indicates that fans and media were right to be cautious.
I’ve questioned why I stay involved financially. Tax advantage gone and yet I gave even more. I called about getting another parking pass and I think they genuinely got excited. The program is not getting butts in the seats.
I’m ok with it being out there. Just like when @SpringBokVol said he expected Grant to slump this last season.
Sous vide is great if you will actually use it. One of the more advanced instant pot doubles as a sous vide, so you get a ton more function out of that. Find it in the Amazon Warehouse and save a bundle
I think some hoped the "we have no talent" crew was wrong and that we'd jump right back into 7-8 wins.
They were wrong.
Though to be fair, most also hoped 5 wins was our floor...and we won 5 games.
I think the truth of last year is firmly in the middle.
As for looking forward, I think most are cautiously optimistic. I think a major gamechanging hire like Briles could have revved things up. A hire that could get a lot more out of less. I think with Chaney, and his history shows it, we'll need another year to have a big league offense. The defense simply needs waaay better talent along the DL. We need to recruit lights out there over the next 19 months. Championships are won in the trenches and we need the sort of DL depth Clemson has shown you can get, even with top 15 classes.
I think I got ahead of myself. In short, let's go get back to bowling and getting guys in the league.
Doing a great job with the analysis. If you look at both FSU and Georgia his defense took huge steps his second year. I think we could show the biggest steps forward because we started off in a much worst spot. I think the biggest difference will be in having corners who are more experience and not freshman that are treading water. We had very few coverage sacks. One of the main reasons I think our defense will be significantly improved this year is I think we’ll make fewer mistakes. Shown in the table below are defensive rankings in the conference last year against only conference competition. Every other conference team statistically had a scoring defense rank at or better than the lowest ranking phase of their defense whether it be their run defense, pass defense, or total defense. With us our scoring defense was lower than all of the other three measurements and I think that could suggest that while we made a lot of plays on defense last year we also made more mistakes than anyone else.
They say switching from a 4-3 scheme to a 3-4 scheme is rough in the first year because of the learning curve and the likelihood that the appropriate personnel needed for the new scheme are not on the roster. This being our second year in this scheme it’s generally expected that there would be significant improvement, if for no other reason than we’re likely to see fewer mistakes, less guys winging it and doing their own thing on that side of the ball. jmo.
Alabama played 15 games last year. We had the 8th best run defense they faced, Tua had his 5th lowest passer rating against us, we held them to their 6th fewest yards per play on the year, and yet we ranked 13th on their schedule for keeping them off of the scoreboard. Of course Pruitt was unable to contain his frustration on that night.
Georgia played 14 games last year. We had the 6th best run defense they faced. Jake had his 4th lowest passer rating, and we held them to the 4th fewest yards per play out of those 14 games, and yet we ranked 7th on their schedule for our ability to keep them off of the scoreboard.
It’s just a theory but I think we could surprise some people if we can realize our potential for dramatic improvement on defense, and in particular, scoring defense, and I think we probably can do that by cutting down on the mistakes. #PlayTheRightWay. jmo.
