We have to build a stout defense to go with the high-octane offense. You have to be able to play BOTH sides of the ball. This is the SEC. As a conference, we made our reputation on tough defenses. Our defense is anything but. After last night, I'm of the opinion we have to go back to the drawing board when it comes to defense. No more of this just being good enough to stop them from scoring once or twice and then simply outscore them. That's bothered me all season, but I lived with it because we were winning. But last night was an embarrassment. And if truth be told, I honestly don't think Tim Banks is the right guy for the job. We need to do better.
And while I'm laying it out there, I'm just gonna go ahead and reaffirm that I think we need to replace Martinez as well. People keep saying he lacks talent at the position, but are you seriously telling me that he can't find even one serviceable corner?? I just don't buy it. I think we can do better. And I'm starting to question Ekeler as well. I love his attitude, but attitude isn't enough. My understanding is he coaches the Edge/OLB guys as well as being the STC. Well Special Teams haven't been special, and we struggle to generate a pass rush.
We cannot continue on playing bad defense and just hoping to outscore our opponents. We just can't.
