Just some comments on the 1st game –
Mike Neu is probably at least an okay coach. I think he had maybe the best game plan he could manage for the game. Last year he beat Army and Army beat Missouri in their bowl game. Last year Neu beat WMU and of course WMU upset Pitt at Heinz Field. Ball State isn’t in our league but they’re better than some. They may end up surprising some teams in the MAC this year. jmo.
Prior to the game I didn't post anything about Ball State's triumphs against supposedly better foes last year because I didn't want to needlessly upset anyone. lol
Sacks is one of those sexy stats that people, especially the media, focuses on. So there’s a number of people pointing out that we didn’t have any sacks in the game. In looking at that (and I think a few others have pointed this out) I didn’t see any rush lanes open to their QB, none, all night long. We needed to fix that from last year. Initial assessment looks like we did. That will go a long ways to helping us against teams with mobile QBs, teams like Florida, LSU, and others. Slovis isn’t really mobile but if Patti comes into the game this week it’s a different story. jmo.
The other thing about our pass rush in the game was we had 7 quarterback hurries, 2 of which led to interceptions. Would it be better to have sacks and negative yardage plays or interceptions?
The EPA for an interception is considerably higher than it is for a sack. The EPA for an interception is 4.5 points. For a QBH the EPA is 0.41 points and for a sack the EPA is 1.47 points.
Last year our pass rush (QBH+Sacks+Ints) averaged 10.11 EPA per game on the season. In our opening game this year our pass rush generated 11.87 EPA points while simultaneously closing off the rushing lanes that QBs exploited against us last year.
I remember in the spring Byron Young in speaking about our inability to contain mobile QBs last year said that this year our pass rush would be “smarter”. Last year we were going all out to get to the QB and in the process opened up huge running lanes for multiple QBs. It was a design flaw in our defense last year and the opposing QB didn’t really even need to be considered mobile. Bryce Young in the regular season last year had only 2 rushing TDs, both against us. Stetson Bennett only had one rushing TD on the year. You’re right; it was against us. It looks like we may have made some adjustments to fix that this year. jmo.
I know. I know. We still want sacks. They’re sexy. lol
We'll get there. It's looks like we're probably on the right track. jmo.
