listening to some Pitt stuff from Fri/Sat

They're obviously hyped that they won the rivalry game vs WVU. It sounds like it was a "had to be there" moment for their program.

"There's a lot of good from the game, but there was a lot of bad. When you look at Pitt's performance vs WVU, I don't know how you can't be worried about their future."

-the linebackers struggled
-rushing defense was not good at all
-WVU 33 carries for 190, 5.8 ypc (including sacks allowed)
-secondary struggled at times, allowed for stupid penalties
-very sloppy performance - penalties, drops, Slovis ran into sacks, bad tackling, not holding edge, DBs not getting head around
-special teams miscues
-D not getting off the field late in the game

Slovis:
16/24 308 yds, 1 TD - good showing
Last drive was elite
Stats don't tell whole story
OL wasn't bad at pass pro but Slovis would run into sacks or pressure
Pocket management not great, happy feet, not processing reads well
Pitt simplified things for him in 2nd half and he stepped it up
Some great throws
Some bad throws too, especially downfield
But when he flashes he's amazing, last drive was a good QB doing good things

Questions around game plan - run heavy vs WVU wasn't working. Finally got their rhythm late. Narduzzi stubborn on play calling to run and make the run work. Trying to play bully ball and it wasn't working. Finally moved away from it and Pitt hit their stride.

Spreading D out worked wonders for their offense in the end.

Rodney Hammond the star of the show. He's the hot hand at RB right now. Built different, did take some damage in the game.

Pitt a work in progress right now. Still finding out who they are. Pitt better as 11 or 12 personnel, not a heavy package team like Narduzzi seems to be forcing. Hoping the 2nd half Pitt offense carries to next week.

"Next week they'll have to pass the ball more to keep up with fast tempo Tennessee."

Positives:
-some good stuff defensively
-secondary played ok, compared to how bad Pitt media/fans thought they would be
-John Morgan was a monster
-DL found themselves late in the game
-Slovis on last drive
-experience showed down the stretch, veteran leaders not shaken by how close it was
-thinks they have the clutch gene, battle tested team

interior of DL was iffy at times
Need to work on communication
Work on discipline
Defense hurt themselves, not super ball-awarE

Ugly game in all three phases but they showed that they still know how to win. Good team still there, a lot of potential.

Still think Tennessee game will be a tough game.

Shoulda beaten them last year.

More Pitt thoughts from their podcasts:

-first half slow and sloppy
-second half went wild, high stakes rivalry game
-everyone was feeling pretty bad about Pitt this season until a tipped pass resulted in a pick 6 and now everyone feels great
-borderline furious that the rivalry doesn't happen more often. (My note: it really is criminal)

-7 lead changes, 4 ties, crazy atmosphere
-one of the only times this media guy can remember the press box swaying during a Pitt game because of how wild it was. Steelers guys even saying it was a top 5 night in that stadium, even including crazy Steelers games
-WVU guaranteed to fill Pitt's stadium 75% full of their fans, this guy is still pissed about that. Said it was 25% WVU fans at best (probably means it was 30-40%)

-thinks they are in danger of punt blocks. Punting situation not great. Punter an area of concern for Pitt.
-punter can't boom a punt and get hangtime, more gimmicky approach to run out and kick it

-offense was concerning at times
-blocking not great, not a great game for OL
-Slovis didn't read pressure well, frozen in pocket holding the ball too long
-Slovis had deer in headlights moments, until the final drive
-had 6 or 7 OL, or FB out there for extra protection

-a lot of first game rust
-lucky that WVU was rusty too

-rush defense is a huge problem
-runs up the middle not the problem, the runs outside were terrorizing Pitt
-think Narduzzi can fix the rush D, but it's a huge problem
-think they got away with WVU passing the ball down the stretch and wussing out on fourth down. Should have handed it off every play in the 4th.

-their all American DT has to step up, think he will
-John Morgan off the edge was a menace, pleasant surprise for them
-did have some guys leave the game on defense with possible injuries
-DBs were ok

-thinks Pitt fanbase will be polarized by the performance against WVU. Some good, some bad, some very bad.
-surprised that Slovis had 300+ yards, didn't think he played that well

Positives:
-DBs not as bad as people thought
-leadership showed through in the end, guys stepped up and held their teammates accountable
-RBs were good. Rodney Hammond was undeniable. He is a playmaker.

Slovis:
-1st game jitters
-more good throws and good plays than bad
-internal clock in question, 3+ sacks on Slovis alone for holding ball too long

-they may have been holding back on playbook but had to open up completely

- a lot of Pitt fans calling their first game "an eye opener", totally expected to be in command
