Notes from 247 about the second scrimmage:

I think we use more receivers this year than we did last year. We pretty much stuck with 3-4 guys last year, but I see as many as 7 in the rotation this year.

Surprised that Charles could start at corner. Not sure if that’s a good sign or bad sign but I’m excited to see what he can do.

I think we will be fine at tackle, this seems to be an offense that doesn’t need the greatest offensive line in the world. Just need somebody adequate.

I have my eye on FSU and Simmons and Gadson. I could see FSU having a rough year. All that said I think we still end up in the 10 - 15 range. Schools like Texas A&M are going to pass us. I am more interested in elite players at high value positions. Would like to see another elite OT or two jump in…maybe a DT.
If we finish in the 10-15 range, with Nico leading the class, we are off to a good start regardless. Finishing closer to or better than 10 would be an elite class for where this program is right now. I think that we have put ourselves in a position to scrap for a Top 10 spot up until Signing Day, which is all you can ask for at this point.

If our fans pick up on Vol Club and get that rolling, with more momentum and resources, we could really start to disrupt that 5-12 tier and solidify this class as Great.

All it takes is the fans powering the machine and getting some of those elite guys on campus.

We would have to land some big fish. Do you have any info?
In December last year we landed Kaleb Webb, Tyre West, James Pearce, and JWT. Josephs went in November. That was 5 of our top 7 ranked commits last year. That all came in November and December.

In July last year, every one of those guys except for West were low ranked 3 stars. We didn’t even know who Webb, JWT, and Josephs were. We had no expectation of landing West at all. He was committed to UGA.

I expect a similar close this year. The recruiting rankings will also change drastically for these players considering they haven’t even played their senior seasons.

Gibson, Conyer, Leacock, Smith will be 4 stars in December. Maybe Weathersbee also. Davis, Seldon, Bradley, and Herring may be pushing 5 star.

And we have no idea who the Tyre West is this year that Garner will pull out of nowhere. Does he land Parker who is a top 100 or so player?

I agree. The style of offense that we run, and the identity that we will have, requires bodies on both lines. Just a lot of depth.

Of course, to beat the elite (Bama & UGA), you do have to have great starters. For where we are now - trying to get to 9+ wins this year and consistently, a good rotation will do the trick until we can get elite OL here and developed.

Great points.

Also, we will grab the attention of guys that are already committed elsewhere, and guys that open their recruitment back up for any number of reasons. Late risers, like you said, will still be at play as well.

We just have to load the NIL cannons and be ready for war. We can't impact the recruiting process or the recruiting rankings directly, but we can impact the resources that we have to compete with. Having the best resources can go a really long way. We need our fans to get behind this while we still have that advantage available to us.

I fully believe that some highly ranked receiver will notice our offense this year and want in as a late surprise get.

Roderick Robinson is considering flipping as well. That’s a highly ranked 4 star RB we may add also.

It’s August. Rankings change. We will land guys that we don’t even know about right now.

Recruits talk to each other, too. If we get guys on campus for incredible visits, turn some heads with success on the field, and disrupt other programs' plans/offers with bigger and better offers, we will be on 5-10 great players down the stretch that we're not even watching closely right now.

We still have an entire season to continue improving the perception of the program, show out on big stages, get big names back on campus, and raise awareness and contribution of our NIL program in our fanbase.

There are several aspects of this program that could (AND SHOULD) be bigger and better in just a few months. Our recruiting will follow that trend.

Yeah sort of. I've come to 2 conclusions - 1) even when we think we are even, they've essentially always had more talent and depth, even when we thought maybe we had caught up. 2015/2016 maybe outliers.

2) We've just had some awful variance. I mean...the 2017 bomb with 0 seconds left was just nuts. Losing 9-10 or whatever it was...while up 9-0 (iirc) going into Q4...stupid. losing in 2015 on a host of absurd 4th downs...downright ludicrous. But the fact that we did win in 2016 proves it can be done and it will happen again.

I don't believe in curses either, but I do believe general talent and depth tend to win out...but you can also simply have bad variance at times too. The opposite can be said of some uk/usc games from the last decade where we squeaked out wins and had some positive variance. Such as DOB not being called for a dirty play vs that USCjr qb or last year we definitely grabbed Levis's facemask on the last drive and it was missed. Win some and ya lose some...we just seem to always be on the bad end vs UF. That will even out eventually. Starting this year!
Hate that program with the brightness of a thousand super moons.

Could be wrong but i think they will be busier in the portal as this investigation stuff gets closer to being behind us. They'll patch up some spots with ready made players from the portal. Kids are going to want to play here.

@Wickman how is your little one doing?

I appreciate you asking. She has recovered great! She no longer has a PICC line and is on an oral antibiotic that is still working. The infection may have potentially created small cavities in her skull and we will have to have a very minor surgery around age 5 to fill those, but that is TBD. She’s a happy little girl. Crawling and just said Dada for the first time so I’m super happy. We were very blessed and, speaking for my family, can’t thank the people of Volnation enough for praying for my little girl!

I would love to hear the rational thought process of ranking South Carolina in the top 25. They were absolutely terrible last year and really only added a QB that is debatable on how good he is. Yes he is better than what they had and he may actually be great, but the rest of their team is still the team that got lucky as hell to win what they did last year.
Somebody looked at their record and qb transfer...completely ignored how they reached their record by hitting the lottery of close games. When you give up more points in a season than you are able to score...that is very telling.

It shouldn't matter. There should be no official rankings until 4 games minimum. Speculation is one thing, but saying "team A was ranked 1 preseason so they have to lose not to be ranked 1" is so stupid. It should always be based on your performance that season, not what people thought your performance was going to be before the season.
It doesn't quite play that way though. Teams that look sloppy or lucky early will drop or be jumped over.

We were correctly dropped from 9th to 17th after the App St fiasco. Maybe deserved even worse after that flopper.

It's all for fun anyway, the CFP poll doesn't start until late in the season and it's the real determinant.

Fantastic!! Very happy for all of you!! She's beautiful!!

Cool story time… I was dropping my son off afternoons at a local Y this summer. He would spend the day playing pick up games and hanging out. One day I went to pick him up and he wasn’t coming out. I texted, called…nothing. I went inside and finally found him. When we got to the car I started my dad lecture about how I’m busy and he needs to respect people’s time and blah blah blah.
He cut me off mid-sentence and told me this ex-NFL player had offered to train him and his friends for a few hours that afternoon. He said the guy gave him his card and I could contact him if I wanted. This was the card he handed me:
I don't think hanging out at the Y with a card that says: "BreedDemBoys" is a wise decision.
