I might get flamed for this, but this seems like a must win for Heup. Double digit favorites at home, the fans are excited as hell. Dooley, Butch,Pruitt all failed in this situation. This is the spot that Heup proves he is the guy.
2016 - Butch Jones - Vols ranked 14, Gators ranked 19. ESPN Gameday was in town. Checker Neyland was in full swing.

Butch totally blew it, but the Vols won thanks to Dobbs and Jennings.

And we wore smokey greys

I hope he’s not as wound up as we all are. I hope, too, that if we fall short, the folks lambasting others for being negative aren’t going to come in here and crap all over the team and coaches and say it’s done, Heupel will never be successful here, etc.

Do we know if Akron still had their 1's in at the end of the game? Not that their 1's are all that good, just wondering. Our 2's and 3's looked really good at getting to the QB.
I know they switched QB's at the end. Don't know about the rest.

I think they're gonna come out and try to play the game as slow as possible, try to feel us out.

If there were any game for Hooker to come out sharp... man I hope we punch them right in the mouth immediately. If we can get up 14 early, I think they'll start panicking.

"No, we can't start the season like this" and then they'll get desperate, start trying to make plays, which will lead to mistakes on offense and confusion on defense.

Napier’s teams are not built to come from behind when they are down big. We have a 21 point first or second quarter and they are screwed.

I hate to say “must win” this early in his tenure, but he sure would do himself a huge favor with one, and the honeymoon period would take a big hit if we lose.

And do you all remember how poorly that game started for UT. 21-3 at the half. We had the ball first and goal twice and no points.

Dobbs, Jennings, Hurd, Malone, and Barnett just bruteforced that win. With a better coach who wasn't wound tighter than a nun's ******* in the locker room (as you know Butch was), we probably would have won 45-14.

I don't think it means he won't be successful, just a huge position he has put himself in that would gain him more favor with the fans. Or plenty will turn on him.

I don’t think there is a hint of BVS in Heupel. He was coached by Bob Stoops who has the same mentality Spurrier had and that is Confidence, Swagger, and a Killer mindset to not only win but burry the opponent (See SC, Candy, Missouri, Ball st etc). I think he relishes these games not gets nervous about them. That’s why I also think the team will play better because they are taking on his mindset. Our players lose a game like Pitt in years past. Probably don’t get off the mat after 10-0. I think they (players and coaches) know we’re better and are excited to show it.

Exactly

Eh, 16 was a huge moment for sure, but Imo the 2014 loss against the Treon Harris led Florida team was the moment early in Butchs tenure. TN was a favorite, checker Neyland, the Gators were awful.

Muschamp goes to Treon Harris and suddenly their offense has life. Meanwhile we had Dobbs just sitting on the bench.

I think he’s certainly got more fortitude than Butch does but we did get handled by a Florida team that went 6-7 last year. Now one can argue that was a turning point for the Vols, and I think it was, but UF shut this offense down just a year ago.

But we really oughta win this one. I wish we didn’t have the injuries. I’d feel much better. But it seems they’ll be out their best defender so maybe it washes out. We’ll see.

That was the first moment I had an inkling that it wasn’t going to work out. Got off the train for the most part after Vandy in ‘16, but I remember someone saying after the ‘14 loss that Fulmer would’ve won that game and thinking that was probably right. Also remember Butch taking shots at the fans after the game for their being displeased, saying “we learned the love is conditional.” Grow up, man.

Yeah, I'm probably staying away from this one. I hate betting rivalry games.
Same on the 1st qtr. I think the bet for this game will be the 1st qtr total over if it's between 13.5 - 16.5.

As a sign of confidence, you should place a $52 bet on the Vols to cover. 52 being the Vols points per game so far.

just look at the Akron game for proof of that. He was happy to let off the gas, but they played dirty and he aired it out and ran the score up. Love that mindset by Hype.

Exactly. There were cracks before 16 showing in Butchs tenure here. So far Heupel has been as close to a perfect 10 as one can get, this could either get him there or he's gonna fall back some. I mean honestly the only reason we are worried is because the helmets say Florida, put UK or Vandy or any other SEC school not named Bama and UGA on the side of their helmets and nobody would be blinking an eye.
