Coming into Saturday’s Junior Day, 2024 Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering standout athlete
Kumaro Brown already had Tennessee high on his list. Following the trip, Brown discussed the visit and more with Volquest.
“It was a great day,” Brown said of his overall thoughts on the trip. “I enjoyed the game and how the fans take care of the team. They really treat the players there like family.”
Throughout the day, Brown got to spend ample time with the Tennessee coaching staff.
“It was a combination, really,” Brown said on who he spent the most time with. “I spent time with Coach Heup, Coach Mack and Martinez all day. We were all together. I have a bond with Coach Mac,k and with Coach Martinez; I like how he coaches. He coaches and brings the team together.”
Brown continues to be impressed by Tennessee Head Coach Josh Heupel, and Saturday was no different.
“Coach Heup, he is really cool,” Brown said of interaction with Heupel during the visit. “He surprised me when I was eating lunch, and he walked up on me to see how I was doing. Coach Heup is a really cool dude, and I could see myself playing on his team.”
Brown is a versatile athlete, who could line up all over the field, but if he chooses Tennesse, he will likely get his first opportunities on the defensive side of the football.
“They do see me in the secondary,” Brown said on this. “They can see me playing corner because I like to be on the island by myself. They like how I can move and jump.”
Brown has plenty of connections on Rocky Top, including playing 7v7 with multiple players on the current roster, including Cam Miller, whose dad is also Brown’s current high school coach in Memphis.
Having already seen Cam choose to stay in state and be a part of what Tennessee is building has made a strong impression on Brown when considering staying in-state.
“The culture they are building up,” Brown said on what stands out about potentially staying in-state and being a part of what Tennessee is building up. “Me playing 7-on-7 with Cam and Coach Miller being my coach now is really a great honor for me to get into college and have the opportunity to do that.”
Coming out of this visit, Brown was direct about where Tennessee stands for him.
“They are on top of the list,” Brown said of this.
As he continues through the process, with no decision timeline in mind, he does know what he is looking for in a school.
“Family,” Brown said of this. “I am looking for a home. I am looking for a school where I can be treated like family. A place where I don’t have to ask or scrounge for anything because back in Memphis, it is hard.”
The 6-0 180-pound athlete is currently rated as a four-star and the nation’s 295th overall prospect, according to On3. Brown is ranked as the nation’s 26th-best athlete and seventh-best prospect from the 2024 class.
