I almost responded to him, but instead I’ll just quote your response. Hahaha. One “successful” season. Ridiculous.

But let’s be honest, I really enjoyed your response, but it wasn’t among the 8 best responses on VolNation, so, unfortunately, you’re a failure.
What’s funny about this convo is I’m positive that Rick Barnes standards is way higher than mine…. I also feel Iike you have to make a new years 6 game in football or make the college World Series in baseball to have a successful season.

I think all of this is relative. I don't think 2018-19 was a failure by any stretch -- it's one of my favorite teams -- but I was a little deflated they only got to the Sweet 16. On the other hand, I'm elated we got to the Sweet 16 this year, even if that's where the road comes to an end (and I really hope it doesn't).

Alright guys. Spring practice starts this week. The mods were thoughtful enough to have created a basketball forum in the site design. I'm sure you guys who want to talk b-ball will have a great time over there.

You name it and we can discuss it here.

You just said an Elite 8 is a "huge accomplishment."

It is. That's why it cannot be the "expectation." It cannot be both of those things. An expectation by definition cannot be something that is a huge accomplishment.

My boss expects me to be at work on time and work 8 hours. Therefore, being at work on time and working a full 8 hours is not a huge accomplishment. That's the standard.

The floor expectation has to be something that should, by any reasonable condition, be accomplishable. The standard should be a solid result.

And each season can and should be different. If you're a Top 8 seed, it's reasonable to expect a Top 8 finish.

I expect to make the tourney just like my boss expects me on time. A successful season should be a Top 16 seed and/or a Top 16 finish. I expect Barnes to maintain us as a Top 16 program. But if my car blows a tire on the interstate, it's reasonable for my boss to not expect me to be on time.

I personally call a season a success if 1. SEC season title 2. SEC tournament title 3. Sweet 16

The expectation is 1. Top 4 SEC regular season 2. Top 16 seed.

Not all of them have to happen simultaneously. For example, we finished 5th but made the Sweet 16. Still a successful season.

If we were a 1 or 2 seed, I'd move "success" from Sweet 16 to Elite 8.

It's just totally irrational to EXPECT something every year that the program has only accomplished once in 114 seasons.
Expectation may not be the best word but it is what you play for, imo. I can see sweet sixteen being the standard instead of the elite eight. I feel like it should be the elite bc I feel like reaching it makes it a special/elite season. Just like my standard for football is a New Years 6, and in baseball is the college World Series. I am not really concerned about the regular season besides positioning ourselves better for the tourney. I do want to win every time we play though.

As an example….. I feel the baseball season two years ago was much more successful than this past season. Even though this past season was about as much fun as it gets.

Just hope your kid doesn't get on his pee wee football team. "Well, we won more games than the history of the program, but you guys are sad failures. Have some more CiCis. And you... Angelina Jolie's kid, right? Tell your mom to go easy on the pizza. She could afford to lose a few pounds."

This. All of this. Logical sports poetry to my ears 😅

But people now want to move the goalpost after we beat Duke...who we were not expected to beat!

I think you're confusing wishes with goals, and huge accomplishments with realistic expectations. I'd argue that Rick Barnes probably isn't nearly as lazy about setting goals and judging successes.

CEO: "We'd better increase sales by 35% or we failed."
"Sir, we have market research and financial projections..."
CEO: "Keep that stupid **** out of my office."
"Sir, our sales leadership and 30% of the sales team died in a plane cr..."
CEO: "35%"
"Sir, I don't think this is how we're supposed to project goals."
CEO: One more syllable out of you, and it'll be 40%."

Seeding is already a result of the reason as a whole, so I don't really see the logic here. The reason we are a 4 and not a 1 or a 2 is the result of underachieving down the stretch.
Your logic here just doesn't make sense to me at the moment.

The seed is based on our body of work over the course of the season. Think of it as the average. Underperform some games and potentially overperform in others. So we earn that seed.

When I then talk about under or over achievement, I'm talking about in relation to our seed in the tournament. 1s and 2s are consudered Top 8 and should deem a Top 8 finish a success. 3s and 4s are Top 16 and a Sweet 16 is a success. The only reason I don't say "expectation" is because the tournament is such a dang crapshoot.

I guess you're saying we should've been seeded higher but didn't because we underperformed? I guess I kinda get that logic, but we have to remember why we underperformed: injuries. The team changed with the loss of ZZ, so we are a 4 seed. Is what it is.

I know we have some engineers in here...how relevant and valuable is Six Sigma still in the manufacturing industry? Is there a minimum belt level to shoot for without it appearing silly (white belt looks silly to me from the synopsis)

I have a green belt and still find it useful

This started because the first thing you said was that a basketball season is a "failure" if we don't make an Elite 8.

It's not. It's just a huge accomplishment. And a failure, by most people's rational standard, is the NIT.
