Are you comparing Georgia football pre-Kirby to Tennessee basketball? They won a National Championship in 1980 and had plenty of top 4 and top 8 finishes over the years before he got there.

I don’t like it and you don’t have to like it either, but it just is. One Elite 8 in our 115 year history as a basketball program.
Nope. Did you read what I said? Lol!

I compared South Carolina football to our basketball team. SCjr almost hired Kirby before UGA sacked up. Do you not think if Kirby went to SC that they wouldn’t have a title right now even though their history is crap?

History is history. We can easily win a championship in basketball with the right hire. We have everything needed to win. Putting a limit on our program is quite frankly for losers and making excuses. We should have easily made the elite 8. We won’t get an easier path again.

I do fear that 10 years from now we will look back at this as the What Could Have Been era:

Football: Loss to SC costing a spot in the playoff
Basketball: Loss to a 9 seed costing a spot in the Elite 8
Baseball: Loss to Notre Dame costing us Omaha with statistically the best team in the history of college baseball

It’s how you win in the sport, now. But Rick’s portal record isn’t exactly stellar.

That's part of the problem. Coaches can still develop players, but these days, they have to be able to plug and play, too. CJH, Tony V, KJH and Karen Weekly have all scored big in the portal. CRB has had some misses-- but that can change. It has to, really.

Yep. UT is laser-focused on keeping, not firing, the marquee HCs. The internal emphasis is on rock-solid stability and giving the HCs the resources they need to succeed. Every year, UTAD asks them what their program needs to win championships-- and gives it to them. The coaches who are most open to making big changes are seeing big differences. At some point, it's what you do with the resources you've given.

Many people think CRB will retire in a few years. There are other things he wants to do, and the postseason narrative will only get louder.
I never had expectations for Rick to get past 32 or 16 ever here. It’s just who he is. But beating Duke and walking into a mediocre FAU team had me convinced we were going to the elite 8. I will not let that happen again. Lol. Rick is who he is and it’s not changing.

If you ask me it doesn't matter what Barnes does if we can't hit our shots down the stretch. It's tough to overcome a 20-4 scoring run in the second half. I don't know how using a different offensive play style is going to make the players you have not miss shots and put backs while the other team hits theirs. Rebounds made it even worse. We beat Duke because Nkamhoua had an unsustainable best night of his life performance where he took the team on his back offensively and uncharacteristically hit most everything he threw up. We didn't have that in this one. If we ever get a player who can consistently score under pressure we'll be able to compete deeper in the tournament. Until then, sweet 16 is overachieving really.

Skipped most of the Basketball whining as usual. Saw enough to go along with McGill . Anyone who wants Barnes fired is an idiot. Same level of idiot as the idiot in the FF who was critical of Heup for practicing in shorts. News flash: Coaching your son's 11 year old rec ball team does not make you an "expert".
I won a travel basketball tournament in Oliver Springs, TN….. I have been at the top. 🤣

As Pat said, offense sells tickets, defense wins ballgames, rebounds win championships. We had no effort in rebounding, it was really sad to watch. Anytime a shot went up they were frantically trying to get it, we weren't interested.
I don’t think it was effort. I honestly think FAU has elite quickness in 4 spots. They continuously caused a defensive switch with our bigs on the perimeter to ensure that our big wasn’t in rebounding position. Time and again they did it.

They had long rebounds on their 3 point shooting and their quickness got FAU to the ball. Awaka should have played more IMO. ZZ injury killed us for this game.

Firing Rick Barnes would absolutely be idiotic. Unlike most of the basketball fair-weather fans I watched pre-Pearl era Vols basketball. This program has gotten very lucky to 1. hire an up and comer in Pearl and then 2. have a culture/foundation building experienced like Barnes fall into our lap.

I remember that fans didn't appreciate Jerry Green when he was here. But Wade Houston and Kevin O'Neill had never even made the damn NCAA, Green takes the team every year and even makes a Sweet Sixteen. Then back in the dumpster with Buzz and no NCAA appearances for four straight seasons.

Hell after Pearl we were right back in the dumpster with Cuonzo, somehow snuck into the NCAA in his final season and they make a run off shear player talent cause if ya'll remember that team was UGLY on offense, tournament comes around and they average 79.5 ppg on offense... McRae, Stokes, Richardson all said "we ain't going out like this" had absolutely NOTHING to do with Cunozo and his coaching, we got to be a load seed and then we got the most beautiful bracket you could have asked for with a 6 seed UMass and then a 14 seed Mercer that had upset Duke, soon as we faced a legit team (Michigan) we got bounced though.

But Rick's made 5 NCAA appearances, 4 25 win seasons, 2 Sweet 16s, 1 Regular Season Championship and 1 SECT Championship...unless he stops making the NCAA you let that man stay until he retires himself.
Jerry Green absolutely blew chunks. 🤮 Kevin O’Neill built up that team and had it ready(he wasn’t a good coach though…. I was hoping we would hire a good coach but instead we hired Green who had never won 20 games and made 1 NCAA tourney in five years at Oregon.

To be honest, he and santi are the only reason we were in the game.
I have to disagree. He made a couple of nice plays early then started acting like he was Olajuwon trying reverse layups and all kinds of nonsense. Then couldn’t hit from inside 3 feet the rest of the game, not to mention being 7’ tall and having 2 (TWO) rebounds.
I didn’t understand why we were trying to run so much offense through him and Key

I was concerned it might be an ugly, poorly officiated game, but I thought the Vols would find a way. They have the players. They have the talent to grind out a poor shooting night. They did not need ZZ on the court to beat FAU. FAU is a good team, but they're not Duke or Bama.

UT has hit a mental ceiling. CRB and the players, especially the seniors, can't get above the noise when the stakes are highest. I agree that CRB needed to break through and missed a prime opportunity. I think he can still do it. He has the resources, and UT will give him whatever he needs. But he's not going to get that boulder up the hill without trying some new things. I hope he does. It's all there for the taking. Reset and aim higher.

Like...this chaps my ass a bit, HOW are they mediocre exactly? Cause nothing supports that other than you wanting to paint the loss as worse than it really is.

Everyone who keeps belittling FAU, they made it to the Sweet 16, now to the Elite 8. Playing in a lesser conference doesn't make them a bad team. Acting like losing to them is a sign of the impending apocalypse is stupid. This wasn't Purdue losing to Farleigh Dickinson. We had a bad game against a good team, and we paid for it. We couldn't make buckets and we weren't rebounding shots. They were.

Honestly this is the area that if I was DW I'd push Barnes a bit. "Do you need more resources to scout and recruit the portal better?"

He has the resources. But that's a good way to approach it. It's tricky with CRB-- he's been doing what he does the way he does it a long time. And he has been successful with it. But the game has changed and winning the portal is the shortcut to winning now... especially when you're losing most of your starters.

Do we know for certain that Santi, JJJ, ON, and Uros are leaving and not using their COVID year? I know that has been the talk, but I haven't seen anything official. And I'm not sure anyone knows what Julian Phillips is doing yet, either.

Idk how you can call an Elite 8 team with the best record in college basketball "mediocre" but whatever helps you hate Rick Barnes I guess

LOL you're smoking something...he inherited CJ Black and Brandon Wharton, but Green brought in Isiah Victor, Tony Harris, Vincent Yarbrough, Marcus Haislip, Jon Higgins, & Ron Slay.

Then Buzz inherits a 22 win team with Slay, Haislip, Higgins, and Yarbrough and only wins 15 games...
