More Defense -

I noted yesterday that we had improved dramatically in a number of areas on defense last year and of course everyone already knew that. Perhaps the largest improvement was in our run defense. We went from 8th in the conference in rushing yards per game and 7th in the conference in rushing yards per attempt in 2021 to 2nd best behind only Georgia in both categories in 2022. It was no fluke as a look at the “elite” teams on our schedule last year and their rushing performance against us demonstrates.

Here are some of the other notable areas where we improved on defense year over year.

This is a look at 1D+TD% performance for our first 2 years with Heupel’s staff. Clearly the opportunity we have to field a truly elite defense goes through our secondary. I think our staff obviously knows this as Heupel has spoken about it often and of course we loaded up on secondary guys in the 2023 recruiting class. It’s not an easy hill to climb but I think we’re on our way. Jordan Matthews and Rickey Gibson are 2 of the absolute fastest guys on our team and they both had successful high school careers playing the position, unlike some of the guys we’ve had recently that had to learn the corner positions from scratch.

We lost 2 games last year and arguably the reason for both was lack of preparation. Hyatt said in the post game after Georgia that we weren't prepared. John Wilkerson said on the radio postgame show that he didn't think we passed the eye test. I disagreed with him and fortunately Troy Fleming also disagreed and said so on the air. He said he didn't think we were mentally prepared. Obviously with the Carolina game we had distractions, especially on defense. Nobody's perfect....all the time. I think we could have won it all last year, even after losing to Georgia in Athens we still had a path. We need to improve our pass defense and we need to be more consistent in our mental preparation - and don't get cocky. jmo.

And yes, I have rewatched the Alabama game an uncountable number of times. At least from my perspective that was maybe the most enjoyable win for me in at least 20 years. And by the way, Bryce Young and the Tide offense only scored 42 points, for the record. Also for the record, I think we're going to beat them again this year. I do. jmo.

Great post, lots to look forward to.

Chatta dropping them big information dumps is the best time of year!!!

What I'm really excited about is that Bama, Georgia, and Florida all lost starting QBs (Kentucky too, but they suck regardless).

We've not won in the Swamp or Bama for awhile so getting both those streaks broken this year would be huge. South Carolina and Georgie both coming to Neyland and hopefully revenge is served in a big way.

I did another one after this and the bot called me arrogant and a narcissist, then deleted its own reply and shut down the conversation, 😆.
At least you will know when you wake up one morning why your laptop has wrapped its power cord around your neck. She may decide to shut you down.

It's been years since I've been, but one of the Robert Trent Jones locations in Hoover has a spa and nice accommodations. We played the course, but it looks like that one is closed for a renovation. My parents and I stayed a couple of nights. Enjoyed a drink on the patio, and my mom enjoyed the spa.

Look at Primland Resort. It's near the NC/VA border and under 4 hours from Knoxville.
