Austin Price wasn’t keen on promoting Pope and wanted Coach YAC back for RECRUITING purposes. I had a VQ subscription during that hiring process and exchanged differences of opinion with him on that. I wasn’t impressed with YAC as a coach OR recruiter from that limited trial and expressed that…he wasn’t gracious in return. Both he and Hubbs have expressed doubts about Ellarbee and I understand their concerns. I simply believe in him as a developer of talent and we haven’t witnessed a confirmed failure from anyone he’s brought in from two full recruiting classes. I’m waiting that out before changing my take that he’s our best OL coach since the best Fulmer seasons.
i think there's some other considerations to make here, regarding OL as well.
for one, system. tempo is not for every OLman. and some will still view it, right or wrong, as gimmicky and not the way to get to the NFL traditionally. hopefully with guys like Carvin and Wright making names for themselves, that'll start to turn.
i think, also, due to the system, you may not necessarily HAVE TO have blue chippers 3 deep on the roster. our run game is good but doesn't require the same consistent road grading measures some traditional offenses do, and pass protection is timing related (i'm speaking generally here, not getting in to a specific conversation about the merits of the system).
that's not to say you can plug a body in there and everything's aok. but it does allow you to hedge a bit if prospects you're evaluating possess traits necessary to perform in this system....though not necessarily the highest rated guys out there.
as with most OL, how a group of 5 works together as one is going to be the most important thing, and when we're doing the tempo thing, that' really matters.
