It always tickles me when I see people disparage business owners. When I started this company, we didn't have employees. Me, my dad and another guy did all the construction except for the metal fab and welding which was significant. I hired a guy that would come after he got off his regular job to do that work. So, I would work helping build from 8-4 then help him from 4 to10 or 12. This wasn't a week here or there it was constant for months. Now running a business involves more than just building, you have to do the design work, ordering material, paying bills, handling the taxes as well as marketing and sales. Much of that fell to the weekends. I would never ask my employees to do something I wasn't willing to do myself but if I asked my employees to do what I do, they'd be gone by the end of the day.
I'm on call 24/7. I get calls from customers all the time. I got a call a few years ago from a customer on a Sunday evening at 10:00PM. He said his black tank was smelling. I said Ron, buddy, you realize there is **** in that tank and it's going to smell. If it's worse than usual, you need to add more chemicals. Also, Ron, what could I possibly do to help you with your smelly tank at 10:00PM on a Sunday night. He politely said you're right, we'll talk later.
I've got a good group of guys. Need a couple more. They are well compensated but I have no benefits. They have no paid vacation or health insurance. We used to have health insurance but obama care made that all but impossible to keep. I've had to educate them about benefits though. I had a guy that I really wanted to keep. He came to me and told me he was taking another job. I said why. He said they had health insurance and paid vacation. I said hiw much more are you making? He said the same. I said well you are due a raise here. He said what about the insurance and paid vacation. I said get your insurance through Obama care and I'll pay 50% which would amount to under $1/hr. He said what about vacation? I said I'll give you a raise of $2.00 for vacation. He said that wasn't the same. I said are you sure? He said yes, it was less money. I said get the ef of here, your not smart enough to work for me. He turned down a net of almost $8,000 a year to go to another company. (He's since left that job too
).
As tonthe insurance my employees would have to pay almost twice as much if we added it vs going through the exchange and that's with me paying half of their premium and none would agree to take it.
