A super bowl ring is hype.....right, no substance there at all.
Winning a Super Bowl is huge deal. There is no denying that. It's the pinnacle of the sport, and hiring Gruden would make more than a splash. There would be euphoria, incredible national publicity, and Vol fans everywhere would be dancing in the streets. The fan base would be on cloud 9, recruiting would get a big bump, and season ticket and apparel sales would go through the roof. I don't doubt any of that, and as I said, if that happens, I fully intend to eat my crow, jump on the bandwagon, and enjoy the ride.
When I step back and look at the big picture of Gruden's coaching career though, I have to question how long that euphoria would last. What were the circumstances of that championship? What happened before and after?
I think there is a convincing case to be made that Gruden won the Super Bowl with a team built by Tony Dungy and headlined, not by Gruden's juggernaut offense, but by Monte Kiffin's defense. There's no denying that happened after that though. In the 6 seasons that followed that championship, the Bucs went 45-51, failing to make the post-season 4 out of 6 years, and Gruden was fired after his team completely collapsed down the stretch, leading them to once again miss the playoffs.
During Gruden's time in Tampa, they drafted poorly, they made bad decisions in free agency, and they completely stagnated. Yet many people focus on his first year there, building him up to be a football savant while completely ignoring the steady decline and 6 years of relative mediocrity that followed. To me, those 6 years tell a bigger story than the one year of smashing success with a team that was largely engineered by his predecessor. That's why I say I think he's more hype than substance.
Sorry for the rant. I've been biting my (virtual) tongue for weeks.
