A super bowl ring is hype.....right, no substance there at all.

Winning a Super Bowl is huge deal. There is no denying that. It's the pinnacle of the sport, and hiring Gruden would make more than a splash. There would be euphoria, incredible national publicity, and Vol fans everywhere would be dancing in the streets. The fan base would be on cloud 9, recruiting would get a big bump, and season ticket and apparel sales would go through the roof. I don't doubt any of that, and as I said, if that happens, I fully intend to eat my crow, jump on the bandwagon, and enjoy the ride.

When I step back and look at the big picture of Gruden's coaching career though, I have to question how long that euphoria would last. What were the circumstances of that championship? What happened before and after?

I think there is a convincing case to be made that Gruden won the Super Bowl with a team built by Tony Dungy and headlined, not by Gruden's juggernaut offense, but by Monte Kiffin's defense. There's no denying that happened after that though. In the 6 seasons that followed that championship, the Bucs went 45-51, failing to make the post-season 4 out of 6 years, and Gruden was fired after his team completely collapsed down the stretch, leading them to once again miss the playoffs.

During Gruden's time in Tampa, they drafted poorly, they made bad decisions in free agency, and they completely stagnated. Yet many people focus on his first year there, building him up to be a football savant while completely ignoring the steady decline and 6 years of relative mediocrity that followed. To me, those 6 years tell a bigger story than the one year of smashing success with a team that was largely engineered by his predecessor. That's why I say I think he's more hype than substance.

Sorry for the rant. I've been biting my (virtual) tongue for weeks.

Can't believe we may not already have a guy locked down yet....took UCLA two days

UCLA’s season is over, so they can make their hire. We were never going to hire someone before today, regardless of what the “insiders” said.

Then I apologize. I won’t quote your posts anymore about it, except for if Gruden is announced, then I’ll quote you and celebrate with you. Petersen too. Fair enough?

Deal. I'll be happy to celebrate either one, Gruden or Petersen. I won't bring any more info to the board. I thought people would appreciate legit info, but I realize they don't.

I'll take my laps now.

better than Butch striking out looking on a fastball belt high down the pipe.

Just as Saban should not be the standard on the high end, Butch should not be the standard on the low end.

"Better than Butch" just does not cut it for me. Neither does "We could do worse".

Mullen is a good coach, but we won’t win a championship with him. And we’ll replace him in 5 years.

I'm more worried about replacing him in 10 years, as he wins just enough not to get fired but has no conference or NC to show for it. That right there is a different kind of hell, but it is hell nonetheless.

It's like we are slightly upgrading each hire so at this rate we will likely be doing this again in 3 to 5 yrs and maybe we will be back on top in roughly another 10.

People on here fail to realize how awful Msu was before Mullen. Their best coach since the 40's is Sherrill, he was .500 at Msu but at Pitt had 3 straight 11 win season and conference titles, 4 top 10 finishes in 5 years. At A&M he had 2 10 win seasons and 3 conference titles in 7 years. At msu in 13 years he had ONE 10 win season, one division title and zero top 10 finishes. You can only take a program as a high as their ceiling is. Better resources at a better program makes it easier to win and recruit
