Boxing banked off that, and luckily so because everyone who doesn't watch boxing(literally everyone) was like "wtf that's the fight of the century?". That sport is not entertaining. MMA destroys that garbage. Old school boxing is dead
Nah. A while ago there was an SI article that absolutely trashed Dooley for this. It was along the lines of "if Butch Jones were a more vengeful man he'd force a certain WR Coach at Dallas to come to Tennessee's pro day and explain to the scouts why there is a dearth of players..."
It was actually so harsh on Dooley that it shocked me as usually sports writers aren't quite that blunt about it.

To declare boxing dead 5 hours after the most lucrative fight in history seems somewhat premature

I concede that point. But if you can't see that one sport is on the way up and the other is on the way down you are blind.
Baseball viewership is down. Young people joining churches is way, way down. Does that mean that baseball and christianity is dead? Popularity of MMA is up, but the payday and amount of people that just watched the M vs P fight proves that boxing is anything but dead. As for the blind snipe, perhaps, perhaps not. Here's a novel thought - two sports can and do co-exist.
This fight was an outlier to the realities of boxing. Let's not kid ourselves here.
Myself included wanted to see a great fight to rejuvenate the sport. The days of Hagler, Leonard, & Hearns are over. Hell, we can't even get a Holyfield vs Razor Ruddock.
Last night's viewership was driven by old school supporters and younger folks that wanted to see what all the hubbub was about.
I bet a rematch would see a 2/3rd decline in interest. Boxing is dying and will continue to until an exciting heavyweight returns.
. I'm sure I'm in the minority in that I enjoy watching both sports, but I also have no doubt that both can and will survive. Boxing reached it's heyday in the 70's and 80's due to a few big names - and MMA is seeing the same escalation today. When watching the Olympics - boxing is one of the sports heavily featured, not so much for Judo or Taekwondo. Now if MMA is introduced to the Olympics it could be a game changer in bring legitimacy to the sport (as it stands today, the OC considers it too brutal).until an exciting heavyweight returns.
