Would it be exaggerating if I say this is overall the best secondary Tennessee football has ever had?

I know for sure since earlier on in the Fulmer years. We had a great 2 deep secondary during the 1998 national championship season. That's the closest I can compare this one too.

No updates from the scrimmage is just cruel today.

I'll scootch on over to the FF and see if anything is posted over there. It may be safer over there these days anyway what with the lunatics running the asylum over here.

With a defensive unit that isn't short on star players, arguably the player growing into the alpha-male role is sophomore linebacker Darrin Kirkland Jr. The Indianapolis native took off three games into the 2015 season and never looked back. Linebackers coach Tommy Thigpen say he's grown physically during the off-season to help match his ability mentally.

"He can pick it up as fast as anyone I've been around," Thigpen said. "You give him a concept and he can go with it. He's comfortable and he's in great shape. He's playing with a lot of confidence."

Becoming more vocal by the day and practice, Kirkland appears to relish the chance to be a leader at a young age. He isn't afraid of the big moments and is the perfect person to lead the linebackers and defense.

"He has the most important job," Thigpen said. "He's the quarterback and he has to be the most vocal guy. He has to get everyone lined up along with the checks. It's not an easy job. If he sets the front wrong or calls the blitz wrong then he can check out of it if he sees something he doesn't like."

Thigpen loves his group. Having players like Jalen Reeves-Maybin and Kirkland makes his job easier. The praise he has for Kirkland doesn't go unnoticed. He loves that the player he calls "DK" wants the torch and is willing to run with it.

"Nobody wants that job," Thigpen said. "Everyone wants to just go play. He wants that responsibility. He is to the point now that he can tell you what happened out there and talk the game to you when he gets back to the sideline."

Jalen Hurd and Alvin Kamara combine to be one of the most dynamic backfields in the Southeastern Conference, if not the country.

Hurd's quick, but bruising style is perfectly complimented by Kamara's ability to make plays in space. The marriage took some time to come together though and took some convincing on the part of running backs coach Robert Gillespie.

“I think Jalen was able to learn that his freshman year,” Gillespie said. “I think Alvin was able to see it when he was at his other school. The better backs come from really good running back groups, and I think they understand it. In this league, you can't do it by yourself.

“Both of those guys have matured and able to see that they can coexist together.”

The duo seemed to catch on pretty quickly. Hurd and Kamara combined for 2,567 yards in 2015 and both finished with over 1,000 all-purpose yards.

It's a lesson Gillespie believes will be passed along through the program even after Hurd and Kamara move on.

“John Kelly has been able to see that,” Gillespie said. “So now John is asking, 'Hey coach, who's that next guy you're going to bring in here to be the guy that helps me. Who is the next guy we recruit?' We are able to go to kids and say, 'Hey, you guy both need each other.'

“How many other backfields in the country had two guys with 1,000 yards? There ain't many, and I think that's the thing we're able to show. It's not just talk with us.”

Kirkland is real man. Can be our best lb since Mayo, and one of the best in the country evenrually. Love hearing the praise surrounding him.

How do you, or any of us know how many plays their WRs run in a row before they rotate? I dont follow anybody else close enough to break down their rotations.

I watch them a lot and when Baylor has a WR like Coleman catching a ridiculous amount of TDs I doubt they are worrying about mileage. He and KD Cannon rarely left the field. And they throw more than us so how is it our WRs get tired from BLOCKING..... 🤔🤔🤔🤔

People talk about hype but IMO we're underrated.

We got more talent on this team than anybody in the nation.

This will be our year.

I don't agree with you much but I will say that we do have a lot of talent that nobody in the media knows about yet. Extremely talented guys like Gaulden, Abernathy, Buchanan,Warrior, Taylor, Phillips, J. Kelly, Preston Williams just to name a few. We get Croom back to help at a position where he can be a huge mismatch as a pass catching TE. Sapp, McDowell and some of these other linebackers. Hopefully Alexis Johnson can get back. I mean we got guys that will make their presence felt who are unknowns to the media but are very talented.

That nonsense quote about too many miles for WR just solidified my opinion that we can better than Z for a coach. Reaching for a bogus stat like that just makes me think he's even more clueless than I thought. The #1 WR for other fast paced offenses rarely leave the field.

I agree with the conclusion but I really dont blame Azzani for that. That's on Butch.

If it's not originating with the head coach, and I think it probably is, then he'd step in and put a stop to it.

I did this several weeks ago, figured I would do it again for those curious. On August 13, 2015 we had 15 commits and ranked 15th nationally on 247. Note that all recruit star ratings are 247 composite and are at the time of August 13, 2015. Bolded players ultimately did not sign.

He's the WR coach and passing game coordinator. You don't hire people to run something and then tell them how to run it. I agree butch obviously doesn't have a huge problem with it, but I guarantee if another OC or WR coach center in and wanted our top 3 to stay out and get in a rhythm, Butch wouldn't object.

you hurt my family, you had better run and hide.
Shy's family will be playing.
I hope that they run every sack right through him.
I hope they throw him on the qb and rbs. Make his position nonexistent.
Out talent him and embarrass him so badly that he begs to be benched
break him mentally
destroy his pysche and utterly decimate his confidence.
Don't aim to physically harm him, but leave him as an empty husk blown by the wind of his despair.

He is likely to feign an injury to get away

that's how i would do it :)

this!!!

You're forgetting about Gaulden. He's going to start at one safety for sure. Probably FS position. Abernathy & Evan Berry will probably be the backups to TK Jr. & Gaulden with Warrior also getting some snaps as well.

Once agreed with you. Latest from Shoop is that he's getting more reps at Nickel and Warrior/Abernathy emerging opposite Kelly. Berry hasn't been noteworthy at safety so far this offseason IMO.
