Not worried about all these coaching changes. This is all on Butch. This is a pivotal moment in his career. He could make a huge improvement or could hire his Clawson/Sunseri.
I'm not going to freak out over names floated. I'm willing to wait and see how this plays out.
Some more on this situation, from sources:
The dismissal wasn't academics and it didn't follow an arrest, so from the context, it seems like Mostella simply ran out of strikes and was booted for something relatively minor.
Based on Detrick's posts on snapchat, it appears he's already headed back to Alabama (Decatur native).
Was told tonight that Tennessee will help him land at his next school. So Vols aren't completely hanging the kid out to dry.
The News Sentinel is reporting this morning that Detrick Mostella "has been cited to court for possession of drug paraphernalia, according to court records."
That is consistent with what I was told last night. It wasn't a grade problem, and it didn't follow an arrest. So the citation was the last straw for Mostella. Shame for him and for this basketball team. I think he needed Barnes and Tennessee badly. Seemed to be turning a corner in his basketball career.
We'll see where he lands from here. Tennessee will assist him in landing at his next stop.
Every qb has more playcalling experience than WR or TE. It's miniscule, but it's there. You have to know the entire playback and what everyone in the field is doing on every play, just like an OC has to do. You have to diagnose the entire defense, not just the few in front of you, just like an OC has to do. Which in no way is a legit qualification to be an OC, but it's 1% better than someone who's never done it.
Which was my whole point, Scott doesn't even have that 1%.
Point still remains. Tee had no OC experience and represented well. Fulmer didn't and same. Cutcliffe didn't and same. Have no idea how Scott would do.
Not sure why he thinks only QBs can be successful OCs.
Debord was an OL/TE guy. Bert Beliema was not a QB. Neither was Fulmer. Dan Mullen played TE in college then coaches WRs and eventually randomly became QB coach, Jeff Scott/Elliot Clemson combo were WRs in college that coaches WRs and RBs, I'm sure there are more.
You probably prefer a QB guru to call plays but it doesn't mean they are more successful than a OL/TE guy.
Reasons to worry about Scott but it's not because he wasn't a QB. Worry because he is inexperienced play caller. Maybe he will use our TEs more
Azzanni has been trying to leave/get a better title for like 3 years and no one wants him.
Martinez is gonna get fired and his best landing spot is GA Southern.
And Thig wants to go back to UNC, but Fedora doesn't want him.
Oh, and Jancek didn't get a ride to Eugene with Taggart either (at least not yet).
Yeah...I'm all for staff upgrades at this point. It's pretty clear that most of Butch's original staff was comprised of dudes who aren't very well respected in coaching circles.
Rofl, read man. I never said QBs are the only ones that can a be good OC. All I said was Scott has never called plays, not even in the huddle like a QB does, which would only count for an infinitesimal amount of experience calling plays in the first place. It was a humorous way of saying he doesnt even have experience calling plays in ways that don't matter, let alone ways that do matter.
So with Thig most likely leaving now too, who are the top candidates for LB coach? Anyone know any names that Shoop has worked with in the past?
Looks like the defense assistants will be a clean sweep, which is a good thing. With how bad we looked on that side of the ball it was clear there were problems past just the injuries. If we can get the right guys in place I think we can still have a really good defense next year. Not near the potential of this years group but we still have quite a few talented players on that side of the ball.

So it takes the f'ing government to get this search into high gear?
Awesome.
