I thought they were extinct in Florida. Then my buddy said he saw one outside his house while we were down there on vacation. Sure enough, there's regular sightings...

Hybrid Panthers Helping Rare Cat Rebound in Florida

Pretty sure what we call ' black panthers' up here are actually Bobcats. Possibly a rare cougar.

They are rare, very rare. I have heard of Cougar's hunting people at Cades Cove. TWRA are trained to be able to tell a Cougar attack from a Bear attack.

Honestly, i've never seen more white tail killed on roadside than I have this year. I've seen fawns and 6 pt bucks, two actually. They are simply running out of food. TWRA HAS to lengthen hunting season. they also need to advertise or market TN as a hunting destination.

TWRA confirms cougars in Tennessee

Its just a matter of time before Cougars work this way to NE TN.
TWRA just announced CWD in Fayette and Hardeman Counties, which means it's probably spread deeper. There will be new testing requirements before a processor will touch a carcass. Fear of the disease and the hassle of testing in some counties will dampen an already declining number of deer hunters. Not sure what the solution is but the take has to be increased somehow.

Agree on rarity of panthers. I have an in-law in Naples who spends a lot of time in remote outdoor areas. In 30+ years, he's seen one. I have a hard time believing they are in West TN but anything is possible. Heck, we're one act of negligence away from having 200+ tigers roaming Roane County.

The mountain lions in TN thing is legit. People knew about it for years and TWRA blew it off as misidentification or hoaxes until trail cams provided evidence that could not be dismissed.

Also, established by trail cam footage is the long-expected migration of bears into Middle TN as their numbers swell in East TN. Someone is going to have to decide soon whether to increase bear hunting opportunities or have wild bears hanging out with the tourists in downtown Nashville.

Used to date this girl in Haywood (Hillville area In the sticks. She lived within 500 yards of the edge. Her family told me about the Panthers screaming. They had lived there all their lives and said on multiple occasions they hear but never seen.
Wonder if it was coyotes? They make that sort of noise at night.

I've had both in my backyard in Middle Tennessee.

I dont think there are panthers in TN. maybe ocasional roaming through. Im sure cougar/mountain lions exist in some parts.

Black bears, like any game have to be managed. But, ill take a bb all day over cougar.

from the interwebs☝🏻

Florida jaguars have been crossbred with Cougars from Texas. according to the article i linked earlier, making them hardier.

maybe domestic Maine Coons have been doing the dirty with bobcats?
The myth on Maine Coons is that they are a crossbreed of domestic cats and bobcats

Definitely they cannot survive our winters. Even in Tampa, during Winter, they move to areas where heated water used to cool power plants is released. If you see one in Memphis around Halloween, it needs to be rescued and flown south.

There's gators in SC and GA, its a matter of time before they make it to Central and NE TN.

Crafty bastards have survived millions of years, and are flourishing. Winter is a walk in the park for them.

Yeah, that's the one that doesn't. Haven't got the Latin handy, but the others are __________ lynx, as I recall.
Lynx is the genus. You're getting genus and species mixed up. You're probably thinking of the Lynx lynx. Which is the Eurasian Lynx

Yes. I recall that a lady was killed by one in the Landings (Savannah area) a couple of years ago. It's a lot warmer during Winter below the gnat line. If you see one basking at the bald up on Roan Mountain during January, please post a pic.

Edited my post. Did not get them mixed up, it is a mix of nomenclature, that was my point. Bobcat, and 3 (as I recall) _______________ lynx for common names, lynx for genus, and one lynx for species.

I hate to hear that about CWD. From what I understand when they find it they will take out the entire herd it’s associating with. I’m not sure what they do with the carcasses but one theory I’ve heard is that when the deer rot the CWD will attach to the plant life around the dead animal which is then passed onto other deer when they eat the plant. This was just a theory and I can’t remember where I read it but it seems highly plausible.

As far as black bears go I’m not sure that they are super aggressive so they can do as they please with them. Mountain lions though, no thanks. Super predator, though Steven Rinella says they are delicious.

This belongs in the off topic thread....nothing football related.
