I gotcha. More of a Acer Rubrum 'Red Sunset' fan in fall.
Red Sunset we dont see down here. There are so many cultivated varieties it's amazing. Our Big Tooth Maple is really a sight to see. Mexican Mountain Sugar Maple and Chalk Maple is quite nice too. Shangtung has it's appeal too.

I like the JMs because of their compactness and ease of transplanting. Great trees.

Maples are my fav. But if im in south, id have to go with Live Oak, or Bur.

Too many good oaks to choose from. The live oak that grows here (escarpment) is slightly diff from the Empire, it's more hardy but they don't get as big as the virginias that we see near our riparian zones. There are some native oaks I like more as residential trees. Lacey Oak is a pretty one for here, Silver Oak does better in deserty conditions of the Southwest and is one of the prettiest Oaks Ive seen, then further northeast oaks like Blackjack & Bur are really nice. Chinquapins are pretty and fast growing, they can look really nice in areas with more rainfall. The red oaks in general are really beautiful trees. Most trendy landscape oak at the moment is Mexican White// Monterrey oak.

That looks like a nice tree. Ive given some thought to the Silverleaf (it's parent), heard it has some drought tolerance. Would only be suitable for certain situations though, I think. ATX is a tough place for maples, especially w/ all the deer. You guys use any special deer deterrent techniques up there?

Not familiar with that brand. When I lived in Virginia Beach, VA I worked part time at Virginia Beach National TPC course. Played free and also free range balls. Beautiful course. My wife had them fit me for Taylormade R9's. Love those clubs. This Spring bought an Epic driver and love it. Now days I hang out at Bear Trace in Harrison TN where I live.
Have not played bear trace since it was 9 Holes. Often wondered what the 18 looks like now. Drive by it all the time. My Bro and Sis in-laws live on Hamilton Island out there just beyond Bear trace.

Not anymore, unfortunately.

Since this is OT Part Deux, Vandy v. ETSU....

In honor, here's quintessential Champ.

It then begs, Vandy. What you gonna do when ETSU runs wild on you?

Pfft airlayering! Unless we're talking about rootgrafting then why even bother with 'em at all? Gonna need at least a 4 colored microphylla to even rustle my buds.

but really tho oak leaf is where it's at
first time i saw that this indian guy was putting soil in a plastic container prob @ 6 oz, and wrapping it around a fig or some such with saran wrap, I was like wtf? couple weeks later cut limb off below that and planted with roots galore

was thinking about doing that to a limb at my Grandfathers old home place on a walnut, would be cool to keep it going at my place

nah it really is

of course one could improve with a very sensitive or precious tree with fulvic, humic acids, mycorhizzae, kelp, auxins/gibberillins, Recharge, clonex etc...

but soil and a plastic cup can do the job, would be cool to experiment with some diff species
but this guy does it the far eastern hillbilly way.. lol

another simple one using coir and a plastic bag
