I never knew so many Vol fans were French. So quick to give up!
I never understood this joke. My high school history teachers used it all of the time, too. I teach AP US and Honors World History and the French fought their asses off in WWI and while they did surrender after a six week ass kicking in ‘40, the French resistance was pretty hardcore.
The only conclusion I can come to is anti-French Cold War feelings following the De Gaulle years.
Unrelated to Vol football, just never saw the humor in it.

I always thought it had to do with the leadership during WWII and after not so much how they fought, and certainly not the resistance that included many brave women. Just the impression I had.I never understood this joke. My high school history teachers used it all of the time, too. The Vichy collaborators have more to do with it than Anti-De Gaulle feelings.I never understood this joke. My high school history teachers used it all of the time, too. If it weren't for the French we wouldn't be a nation. They pretty much showed up and helped if not won the revolutionary war for us.I never understood this joke.
