Average GPA of 3.97? Are you sure? I know that's including weighted averages, but it still seems insanely high.

Those were the statistics I was given. That being said, 77% of applicants get accepted. They'll gladly take your money.

May not be the cheapest but he can get a job on campus that could pay towards the education as well.

Also, depending on how far you live from campus and what degree, it’s wayyyy cheaper (obviously) I got my degree in Supply Chain, lived from home and it was like $7500 a semester without scholarships.

We live in the Nashville area so that's not an option. He's just going to have to work hard. I obviously want him to go there but I don't want him to end up with too much debt. He's only a freshman and took the ACT & SAT in middle school. He scored a 25 on the ACT in 5th grade. He is taking almost all AP classes and also does pretty well in track and cross country. He's so young that he's nowhere close to being sure about a major but he likes Sciences, Engineering and Business. We'll see how it works out.

I remember to this day that a kid in my class got a 12 for just writing his name and filling out stuff randomly and the next day he said he wanted to be a doctor and felt great about his score. He received his score and got a 12. He now builds and repairs furniture

Not everyone needs to go to college. We need furniture and plumbers and electricians too. Also, ACT/SAT scores are not a measure of intelligence. I know plenty of people that scored through the roof on those tests, but they don't have sense enough to come inside out of the rain.

the left and right of center are gonna have some difficult choices to make, agree. my gut says nobody the dems have offered up can beat trump unless voter turn out is just plain bad cause everybody thinks "trump is gonna dominate, so what's the point...."

Trump is filling arenas and people are camping out to get tickets. I don't think Weekend at Bernie's is going to be able to excite the Democratic base enough to vote for his Socialist agenda and beat Trump. So we have four more years of investigations and sniping back and forth between Trump and the Dems. Unless the Republicans can take back the House and then the Dems will lose their ability to control the committee agendas.

I was hoping Ben Carson would've gotten the nod in 2016. He is a smart guy and I think he would be a fantastic president.

Oh I barely know who that is, I just made the joke because of them using the exact descriptives.
Would have made the joke if the situation was reversed.

General mocking of the way political people go on about time spent golfing or the national debt rising, so on, etc.,.. then it happens with their guy too and both parties just switch sides of the debate.
And act like it didn't happen, haha.

politics is the absolute worst.

So so true...my daughter could not stand HS and was so ready to leave by the time she graduated. Traditional college was not for her so instead of a 4 year school she went to a juco for free (in Tennessee) on the Promise scholarship and took the EMT basic class on a fast track which condenses it down to one semester. She came out with a job almost guaranteed and started working at an Ambulance company making $35k/year as an 18 year old with no school debt. She'll continue down the path towards a paramedic certificate. Just one example of how a trade school path can work.

I got you. I do wish somebody would make a stand against the national debt. I hate it when the politicians say we have to raise the debt ceiling or we will default. No we won't. We just won't be able to spend more than we take in because the credit card will be maxed out. Our government is the only entity that I know of that can just up it's own credit limit and keep on spending. I could balance the budget tomorrow but lots of folks would be pissed because their toilet paper museum lost it's federal funding and they wouldn't be able to build that four lane highway into the middle of nowhere to service 200 residents of Jimstown, VA. So much corruption and pocket lining going on at the expense of the tax payer and future tax payers.

they have absolutely zero incentive to balance the budget. You do realize our legislature gets most of their income lobbyists, who want them to keep providing government contracts. It is broken.

You're absolutely correct! I know two young ladies who went to cosmetology school instead of college. 9 months later, both were already working. School was $15,000 but both made over $50,000 last year cutting hair. Not too bad considering they're not even old enough to buy alcohol yet.

This is how you do it. You don't rack up $200k in college debt. Who knows what her future holds, but it doesn't hold college debt. Congrats to your daughter!

i don't either, and it sure isn't gonna get the folks that are just right of center to swing that way.

and the democrats know it....at this point, democratic policy doesn't even matter. it's about whether or not they can get a nominee that could beat trump. and they don't have one. and none of hte candiates seem all that interested in finding and backing one..... that's not themselves. lol.

A lot of trades are struggling to find young people to apprentice and learn. I have a friend whose son is studying to be a machinist. It might be a pie in the sky estimate but his school told them he could make up to 70K when he graduates.

Welding is also great money.

Buddy of mine just left for Alaska to weld, I think on the pipelines. The work sucks due to 15+ hours out in the freezing cold, but everything and I mean everything is paid for, all he has to do is save money and whenever he decides to move back he will be set for life.

Edit: he will be making around $120k or more

77% of applicants are admitted but it's definitely competitive and MUCH more expensive than it used to be. UTK's average incoming ACT score is a 28 and the average GPA is a 3.97. My son is an outstanding student, and he wants to attend UTK, but it's going to nowhere near his most affordable option.

Also depends on what program you are trying to get into. The Haslam college of business won’t even consider you with at least a 27 ACT, same for other nationally ranked programs. It’s a little less for some programs.

Got accepted twice
HS
- 2.5 GPA, 21 ACT

Went to Pelli for two years
3.0 GPA, got a certificate for getting all A’s in business classes. (Meh grades in English, Math, history)
Applied to UT, got accepted again.
(Applied to business school because it was my junior year coming up)

I think the ACT only really matters as a Freshmen to get in because technically you're not starting your major as a freshmen or sophomore, which means you aren’t in the business school, communication school etc. till junior year because that’s when you start your classes for toward your major. They didn’t require my ACT transferring from Pelli, just my GPA.

How much does being furniture pay? I am interested.

Also, if you go to a community college first, and do your two years, go the Tennessee transfer pathway, all you need is a 2.75 for the business school at UT.

Lastly, don’t do accounting lmao. I majored in it for a semester at UT, it’s he hardest curriculum and one class (that’s almost impossible) requires a B-. The teacher told our class that 90% would change majors before the 2nd test.....he was right.

Just a forewarning, unless you’re just ridiculous at it. I also got A’s in both accounting classes at Pelli, granted community college is easier than HS.

That’s great to hear, I was just going on recent comments by Dean Mangum and others. Today those spots are ultra-competitive.

For someone who asked, the all in cost of UTK (no scholarships BUT includes dorm and meal plan) is now considered to be 24K in state and about 40K for out of state - annually

Most of the time they will put higher standards so that less qualified applicants don’t apply and only the more qualified “smarter” kids apply and make their overall GPA, incoming ACT, etc better looking for future students.

Cost is accurate but like I said in an earlier post you can get jobs around campus that helps pay off tuition, but don’t quote me 100% on that
