Recruiting Forum: Official Appalachian State Pre-Game/Game Thread

Didn't mean to be a downer. You guys think tonight's performance doesn't matter. Rankings are somewhat subjective, so I think it matters. And I think it will be a topic of much discussion all week leading up to Bristol. I'm glad for the win, but I think the perception of UT has changed. We can disagree. That's cool.

So when we boat race VT next week...does that change the perception again? In the end the only thing that matters as far as perception..is 1-0. That looks the same from any angle. I give up predicting this team. When Dobbs sees the pressure and hits the passes. This offense is an unstoppable thing of beauty. When he doesn't, it is the equivalent of having a wisdom tooth removed with no anesthesia.

We played terrible...NO EXCUSES ANYMORE!! Thankfully, we are 1-0. Coaches and players need to live up to the 2016 motto and "OWN IT"! Own that we played flat, tentative, and conservative. Own that we called the game the exact same way. Own the mistakes, correct them, then come out with an attitude next Saturday and show CFB who we really are. OWN IT...NO EXCUSES!!! End of story

After having some time to calm down, I've got a few takes:

1) the unluckiest team won last night. We had everything go against us and still came out with the win. Bad calls. Fumbles. Etc.

2) App St was a pretty decent team. More so on defense than offense. Their DL were small and quick, able to shoot gaps and disrupt our OL's push. It's hard to prepare for something like that. Luckily I don't think SEC interiors will be that small and quick.
The misdirection on offense is tough. It was like playing GT. When we lineup against more traditional teams I think we'll be just fine.

3) still don't know how good Dobbs arm is. Preston was a monster in the first half. And then Malone turned it on in the clutch. We've got the wideouts to win some games we lost last year.

4) Butch, DeBord and Shoop had to be trying to keep some things off film. No way this is the play calling we bring into th<script id="gpt-impl-0.5142004388475905" src="http://partner.googleadservices.com/gpt/pubads_impl_94.js"></script>e meat of our schedule. I know that doesn't make sense given how close the game was but I truly believe once Malone scored Butch and co. thought the defense had them figured out and wouldn't let them score again.

A thought on number 2 there...We could have lined up in an I form and literally bulldozed that team into oblivion for that reason...but it is stupid to change your offense that drastically, for no other reason other than to get style points for blowing out that team. You will see the game plan they have been preparing for next week. They showed nothing last night for VT to work on, that they didn't already know about. I have a feeling next week is going to look a lot different.

Since I don't have any kind of TV reception, can someone tell me what happened on the Preston Williams catch that everyone is talking about?

Back of the end zone, fresh DB draped all over him. Made the catch with two feet in bounds. DB had his arm/ hand in there. Preston's knee hit (out of bounds) ball came out, DB jarred it loose. Did not maintain possession through the catch. CBJ called time out to give time for review, officials did a quick review. Clear no catch as ball was on ground after P.Willy and DB landed out of bounds.

He caught the ball with both feet down and had the ball all the way till he was down. Once he hit the ground the ball popped out.

If it had been called a td in the first place the call would have stood, but it wasn't and they weren't going to overturn it.

The play I was more angry about was letting us run a play after the Josh Smith play then going back to overturn the call. Never seen that before.

You have to maintain possession after you hit the ground. It would have been reversed imo. You're absolutely right on the Josh Smith review. There was 0 attempt to stop the play, no whistles were blown at all until Hurd was tackled.

I think Brent and Jesse may have to take a paternity test when App State has their baby in 9 months because they were all up in that last night. One of them is gonna owe App State some child support money. I told my wife that I wished I could mute the announcers and just leave the crowd noise.

He caught it, had control of the ball, went down and rolled over and the ball came out after contact with the ground. Not sure how the college rule compares to the pro rule. The definition of a catch has kind of gotten silly, but then again, I am a Cowboys fan. The Dez catch didn't make sense either.

Edit: I really didn't have a problem with the ruling on PWilly's catch.

Guys....everything that could have went wrong did go wrong last night. We pulled it out and won. This team will look totally different next weekend.

People act like teams never struggle against lesser teams. We played worse against North Texas last year and they may have been the worst team in college football. People that watch this team should realize that the offensive gameplan was nothing like it usually is.

The playcalling nearly cost them the the game because I think they severely underrated an 11-2 team that returned almost everyone.

I agree. I don't think they want Dobbs to run it against "weak" opponents to keep the hits off of him (as many of us have already speculated), but if they are going to do that, they need a different formation. This offense requires a QB that is a threat to run. Use an I-formation if Dobbs isn't going to ever keep it. Let our 240 lb. RB get a head of steam.

While that is definitely the case IMO, they have to be willing to change that philosophy when the game is much tighter and on the line than we hoped for initially. Better to win and take a few hits than lose.

This. Ohio State won a national championship doing this every week. Just win.

Do you blame them? An upset would be exciting for Brent to call and I'm sure Jesse has an obvious dislike for UT.

I don't blame them but it doesn't make me any less nauseous.

I really don't think Jesse shows much favoritism or dislike. I thought he was pretty objective, and even objective people would have concern about our play.

Lost to Memphis with Peyton Manning. It happens.

True. Shouldn't have happened, the team was totally out of synch and unmotivated. However, the officials caused that loss as well. KO returner's knee was down. No replay to overturn.

I agree that he is a pretty professional analyst, but you know on the inside he was rooting like crazy against us. Can't really blame him though.

There was no holes for Hurd or Kamara. The RB for App State(Cox) had holes to run thru pretty much all night but less in the 2nd half. Our OL play was terrible against a DL that we outweighed on average by 40-50lbs. That's very troubling to read into & what it could mean for the future.

Our DL even got pushed around the 1st half but buttoned down in the 2nd half. No doubt the worse part of our game was the OL play. I also say the coaches screwed up by not taking more shots down the field. The DB's were playing tight the 1st half & not one single pass down the field on the outside to Preston Williams or Malone.

App State DB's backed off after Malone burned them. Should have came much earlier in the game though. I'm not a coach but I just question some of the playcalling by DeBord. It's too conservative. Kind of like the end of the Fulmer days. VT is going to be tough but quite frankly a different style & may even be a better matchup for us.

"hey great catch Malone, you won the game for us! You really owned that FRESHMAN corner! Now block for the rest of the game that is your last target."

Un. Freakin. Real.
