'19 Recruiting Forum: Official Georgia State Pregame/Game Thread

Yeah it’s still possible to make a bowl. But not much else. And that of itself is not a good year in year two. A very small step forward.

Puts everything on next year, when the schedule is much harder.

Sure. This could be a wake-up call that coming out unprepared and playing lethargic in the heat gets you beat. We'll see how it goes with BYU. I'm sure the Cougars must be re-energized and licking their chops.

Date: Saturday, August 31st

The wait is nearly over and the Tennessee Volunteers are almost ready to kick off this highly anticipated 2019 campaign against the Panthers of Georgia State. It's been a long, somewhat bitter wait for Vol fans as 2018 saw upsets vs. Kentucky and Auburn, only to be let down with losses to Vandy and Missouri as the team limped into the off season without a bowl game... again. Let's be honest, there isn't really a scenario that sees Tennessee lose this game, so the keys to victory are much more about what we should hope to see from the game, and not what is needed to win the game, so let's take a look:

Keys to Victory Stuff I'd like to see:

1. Efficient Offense: We don't need to see the playbook opened up. Chaney can probably keep his plays listed on the back of a napkin from Firehouse Subs, but we need to see an offense that is not bogged down, stuck on 3rd downs, and having unforced errors and turnovers. Simply put, execute. The GS run defense game up over 250 yards per game last year. They will do the same on Saturday.

2. Offensive Line Chemistry: The first play of the 2018 season for the Vols was a famously awful blow right up the gut of the Tennessee offensive line and direct hit on JG. Things didn't get much better for the year. I expect Tennessee to go through a lot of players on the OL to see how they look under the big lights in an effort to find their best 5. Wright and Morris will struggle as freshmen, but they need the experience, so be forgiving as they learn on the job. It will pay off when we have a team capable of competing for the division in a couple of years.

3. Shrout and Maurer: Let JG get 2 1/2 quarters and have a seat. I'd like to see Shrout and Maurer both get playing time because it only takes one play to end the season of your starting quarterback. They need as much experience as possible to be ready for the worst case scenario and to hopefully create some clear separation between the two for the back-up role.

4. DL and LB Performance: Our secondary has the potential to be lights out, but there are serious depth concerns up front. The newcomers need plenty of playing time in a low risk game to be ready for higher stakes later this year. Once again, we don't know what we've got on the DL and need to see who shows up on Saturday nights. The Panthers lose 4 of the starting OL from last year, so expect plenty of action behind the LOS.

5. Stay Healthy: Do this thing.

Prediction:

Georgia State was awful last year, with all due respect to them, this game is about Tennessee having a quality scrimmage in front of 102,455. Look for the offense and defense to be conservative, but effective. The Vols will average over 5 yards per carry and Ty Chandler and Eric Gray will combine for over 200 yards. JG will be exceptionally sharp and efficient with something along the lines of a 15-18 243 4 TD day. Good day to be a Vol.

This turned out so wrong it's like a Bass take and a Hank take had an unholy demon baby and took a giant dump on VN.

If it continues to go south with Pruitt, I think UT will close ranks and hire an alum to put the program in trusted hands, like they did with Kellie Harper. But we have two winnable games on deck. I want to see if the staff can pull the season out of the ashes.
Tee looked frustrated with Chaney all night, and then absolutely disgusted at the end. Really alarming he’s the only coach who looked upset.

Lol. This line: "The first play of the 2018 season for the Vols was a famously awful blow right up the gut of the Tennessee offensive line and direct hit on JG." is hilarious since our second play of the 2019 season was a damn turnover that led to 7 quick points.

Lulz, ok. I stand by what I said and ain’t gonna argue with you tonight. It’s just not worth it at this point. But, JG sucks and is a huge problem for this team.
Agreed on the last part. Just don’t see how anybody who kept their eye on the OL and can today can say they were much or any better than we saw to end 2018. Much worse opponent, slightly better push. OL and DL suck as well and are also huge problems for this team.

So do I. My confidence in that happening is.....low.

This is bad. As bad as ever.

The push wasn’t anywhere it needed to be. But they did give him time to throw unlike last year.

I still can't get over the weird feeling of seeing the players getting their ass handed to them by GA State and seemingly being indifferent to it. Judging by body language, it didn't seem to bother them at all.

Yep. When GA State makes you quit, there’s something rotten at the core. This goes beyond bad line play or a poor performance by a quarterback.

I have been a JG supporter but the writing is on the wall. He needs to be benched immediately.
Same. He’s the guy that’ll check down on 3rd and 10 to get himself a completion rather than risk an INT to get a first down/big play. He just doesn’t have the playmaker mindset it takes to win games.

Teams playing true freshman all weekend. Can’t keep saying “what if”. We already know what we have in JG.
And maybe the coaches know what they have in Shrout and Maurer and they suck too.

Anybody trying to lay this loss at the feet of JG for being a bad QB is being willfully ignorant. This team has much bigger issues than a below average QB. Could a great QB like Dobbs maybe will is to some victories and mask how crappy we are everywhere else? Maybe. Would it change the fact that we’re garbage on the LOS and are an inherently flawed team? Hell no.

They don’t know what they have. They played 67 guys today. Ignorance, is playing the same guy every year and expecting different results. Oh wait, that’s insanity....

If you can't hold GA state below 30 points, you deserve to lose. JG isn't great, but I agree this isn't on him.

They did give him more time than they gave him against Vandy or Mizzou (for the bit he was in). They also still blew assignments, RBs sucked pass blocking, and OL as a whole failed to get any kind of consistent push in the run game.

This was a much worse run defense than we played at any point last year. And the OL still couldn’t get any kind of consistent push.

Whatever, I’m done with it.
