Recruiting Forum: Official Ohio Pre-Game/Game Thread

I'm gonna just skim the dumpster fire that I am sure this thread became and say 3-0. It is gonna be a long week on VN. I hope some of our starters on D are able to go next week and I hope our OL learns to play football. Go Vols!

Sure hope I'm wrong, but it feels like this team is fixin to go 0-4 during the most important stretch of the season. The way the OL is playing, we will have a hard time scoring against most SEC defenses. Dobbs still can't throw the ball downfield and opposing defenses are blowing up the horizontal passes. Would love to see Dormady inserted as a change of pace since he supposedly has the better passing game. Those two missed TD passes by JD would have made a huge difference in this game. Obviously JD is an impact player as a running QB, but I can't wait to see this offense when there is a legitimate downfield threat in the passing game. As it appears right now, don't see this team accomplishing what I thought they would this year. I hope they get the ship righted and prove me wrong, but injuries are now going to make that much more difficult.

There is a reoccurring theme every year since Butch has been here. Various excuses, some valid have been thrown out, but the excuses are becoming increasingly invalid. The O-line is again a weakness on this team. Ware said he reviewed the game film and Jack Jones jumped out and that he could be our best lineman, yet it takes two games for him to start. The common denominator is Mahoney and to a certain degree DeBord. Everybody going on about how DeBord was the reason the line improved last year. We need a competent O-LINE coach yesterday.

SEC Championships are won in the trenches. We've played three non-sec teams this year and all three have arguably better O-lines than ours. That is unacceptable.

Good post. This team definitely has some talent; what it doesn't have is a good OC, OL coach, and QB coach. A lot of people complain about ZA but Malone looks much better, and you can't really uncoach stone hands.

If we had good coaches in those spots, I think the talent would have been there for a run this year.

I do. I think it's on the OL/scheme though, because our rushers are getting the majority of these yards on their own. The most concerning thing for me both vs. Ohio and vs. App St. has been the inability of our O-line to get any consistent push in the run game.

They got much more of a push against Ohio. Others have alluded to it, but AK and Jelly look much better with the handoffs and hit the hole faster. I will take us for running for 200 yards against UF right now.

Butch has had time to assemble a decent O-line. No excuses.

While it is concerning, we, as fans, overreact every single week. Last year, we were talking about the WR's and then we win 6 straight, and the offense looks unstoppable at the end of the year. This year, it's the OL. The season is long, and there will be games where guys underperform. The question is can we win some of them when they do.

You can say it's a cliche all you want, but each game is different. Next week is huge for Butch Jones. I expect to see some creativity like last year. The man didn't just get dumb over the offseason. Watching UT football is a joy for me, and it is getting to stress me out. It shouldn't be that way, and it's no one's fault but mine. I just want to enjoy wins.

We won 6 straight games last year because we played bad football teams....and yes Northwestern was bad.

He just said in the post game interview that he has to watch the tape on the Oline and he will let everyone know how they looked on monday. What a joke.

That sounds familiar. Didn't we used to have a coach that would say he wouldn't know till he watched the film yada yada work like heck?

I agree but you can't win if you don't have an O-line. This isn't a one year thing. Bad O-line play has been a reoccurring theme since Butch has been here.
