'24 Recruiting Forum: Official Ohio State Pre-game/Game Thread

Last night was a flashback for me, to the early CJM years 77-81/82
I‘d watch the game knowing we needed the other team to help us win. We were over matched in talent, size, speed.
It can be fixed but its not without heartache and pain. CJH has some hard decisions to make inside his staff, his roster and recruiting priorities. This means HS and portal.

This is all very clearly @Weezer's fault. He went to his dog and human eating yeti party and then that abomination occurred on the field. Don't know what more proof we need to ban hammer him into next century.

#endtheyetiassault
Lies!

I have it on good authority that @Glitch 's recent absences are due to him joining another Vol board where they let him start game threads. History has shown what happens when @Glitch starts game threads! He and he alone is responsible for last night's tragedy!

You broke my heart, @Glitch . You broke my heart.

Eh, against equal and marginally better talent he was elite this year. In the losses:

Arkansas - put that blame on the offense. Defense played more than better to win.

UGA/OSU - just complete talent mismatch made coaching look bad. LB and Safety play tonight in particular, was awful.

And with Alabama they had the better talent but Banks found a way with what he had.

Most every other game defense was elite this year.
I’m a pretty positive person and rarely jump to conclusions without giving time for things to play out. So while we definitely have some talent gaps in defense, it is glaringly obvious to me that we have overcome some scheme deficiencies against lesser teams with dominant DL play and good CB play. When those 2 things even out, or even tilt slightly in the favor of the opponent, our defenses gets WORKED. I see guys out of position, looking like they have no clue where to be. Slow reactions, hesitation, bad angles, always chasing the play rather than being able to anticipate. We just don’t look well coached imo.

On offense, we have to add some new wrinkles and routes imo. We are easy to defend now. On critical 3rd downs, do we really have 4 guys out wide running go routes or curls? Is that the call?

I am happy with where we are as a program right now, but if some self reflection isn’t done and changes made, I feel like we are close to our ceiling.

And it is the 4 from the same set. Never any overloads or spread the ends wider, just lines up in the position each time. Does drop an end in certain zone calls but not their strong suit.
Most of the time when an end drops out it’s a waste of a player. Either the player doesn’t do what they are coached or they aren’t being coached well

Not that it would have changed the complexion of the game or anything, but I'm still perplexed and infuriated by that pitch on third down during our first possession of the second half. Over thinking to the extreme on that one.
Didn’t love the call because I think you need to throw in that situation but if Campbell can get to his block, it’s a first down.

If you are talking about the shuffle pass to Lewis, it looked wide open if Campbell didn’t get dumped into Lewis lap like a rag doll

Thought the difference in overall talent was clear last night.

Specifically I'm done with this receiver room. Players, coach, all of it. I think they've sucked for two years now. Still clinging to the reputation that Hyatt and Tillman brought them. It's not all on them - we were overmatched at a lot of positions against OSU - but that's as good a place to start as any.

I think we have a tendency to overreact. I’m not sold that pope has done a good enough job. However I look back at banks and everyone wanted him fired and just 2 years later we have an immensely better defense. Georgia tried to steal pope this year and that tells me he’s highly regarded.

We lack some speed and athleticism at WR compared to a few teams like OSU. Some of it may be developmental but there’s also some raw talent differences.

I think we need to recruit better and luckily we are starting to. Mike Matthews will be a big test next year for how we are at developing talent. But lots of WR’s don’t pan out.

OSU and Oregon definitely have a recruiting edge and we need more NIL and also pope needs to show he can put more guys in the league to get to that level to build a more consistent talent pipeline

Did I hear correctly, that players were in the process of renegotiating NIL deals the week of this playoff ?

If so, let all them walk. Everyone of em
They said on the broadcast that Ohio State coaches met with their senior captains with how to deal with players that wanted to enter the portal. They were asking some to hold off for the playoffs. Maybe paying a little more.
