'20 Recruiting Forum: Official South Carolina Pregame/Game Thread

Initial post game thoughts:

  • Completely unimpressed with the coaching this game.
  • Completely unimpressed with JG. He is what he is. Pass to Gray on the failed flicker was savvy and the dime to Palmer was nice - outside of that there were so many missed opportunities.
  • We escaped with a four point win when we should’ve won by two scores.
  • Banks... I mean, come the f on dude.
  • Who tf was #96 at the end? He was huge.
  • Tyler Baron is a grown man.
  • Enjoyed seeing Chandler, Palmer, B Johnson, D. Johnson, and Velus ball out.
  • I wasn’t keeping track completely, but we went with a different line combination seemingly every drive.
  • Our secondary sucks. Thank god Nick Muse dropped that 3rd and 15 that hit him in the hands.
  • Ugly and not exactly giving me confidence, but damn I love a win. Especially against those guys.

I was pleased we got some TOs and did not have any TOs, all things considered.

We played surprisingly error free penalty-wise considering the lack of practice for so many kids (and no scrimmages)...until that last offensive drive, which really crippled our chance of icing the game.

Shamburger being out was a much bigger deal than Middleton as we had to play a true freshman, Slaughter, who did some nice stuff, but got abused by the veteran Smith and the TE on those crossing slants.

JG was JG. He is what he is. We could have easily been up 28-7 at halftime and could have put the game away with that frist TD of the 2nd half. If we are going to upset any of the ranked teams on our schedule we have to have much better QB play.

Despite their opening drive for a TD, if we had been able to run the ball consistently, this game would not have been close.

Which concerns me, given the preseason build-up for our OL.

But I just appreciate these young men coming out and playing, given all the turmoil they have been through.

1-0 Go Vols!
Agreed, but it's also the first game. I expected rust, and rust is what we got. But we found a way to get the win, and that's the most important thing.

First half we got pass happy and didn’t commit to the run. Second half was much better. Gray and Chandler combined for 126 yards 5.04ypc I’ll take that just need more of it.

Should have been more. Abandoned the run too often. I was not a fan of a lot of Chaney’s play calls, but we won and that’s most important.

Chaney was taking what the defense was giving. They seemed intent for most of the game on stopping the run, and we were getting a lot of one on one matchups all over the field. JG just wasn't making the throws, especially on 3rd downs.

Backup QB is always the favorite for everyone in these situations lol it never fails.
So true, but come on, JG is going to JG. The best pass I've ever seen at Neyland (live, duh) by was by Shrout to Callaway, last year against SC. Yes, I was in the south end zone and had a perfect view of the pass, but I have seen Streater, TRob, Kelly, Heath. Peyton, Tee, Bray and Dobbs, live, also, just saying

Soooooo who got the closest prediction in this game? I know it wasn’t me. They scored more than I predicted. Who’s da man?

We likely don’t need the late game miracle if Keyton makes that easy catch that hit him right in the numbers, on the second to last drive. If he catches that, we’re almost in FG range, already up 7, with like 6 minutes left.
Probably don’t need any of that if JG hits two wide open receivers.... or Hyatt.... or any of those 3rd down throws to open receivers.....

Cool.

I mean, we all pile on JG for missing throws but that one I mentioned was right on the money and Keyton didn’t secure the catch.

I’m being petty but there’s a number of uscjr players that our staff wanted, but who chose to go to uscjr instead. Jaycee Horn and Joseph Anderson immediately come to mind. Horn was a UT commit who bailed on us. Jammie Robinson and Zaquandey White were also guys we courted. Just off the top of my head.

Feels good to hand them another reminder that they made the wrong choice.
