I have 2 main reasons I don't think he is a good hire.

Convince me otherwise. I am open minded.

1) the out scoring Method doesn't win enough in the SEC. can he play defense and keep his offense on the field long enough to rest a D???

2) he is winning with a program that Fuente left in great shape.

3) got drilled by the guy we should target before him

Ironic how the Memphis and Vandy coaches keep getting poached while UT has to fire ours and pay massive buyouts for years. Strange turn of events.

The reality is any one we might bring probably isn't beating Bama. Defeatist, I know, but they're just too good.

Also important to keep in mind Mullen is still young. We would be players for the East year in and year out with Gruden, Frost, Mullen or Campbell. I feel pretty confident in that.

My Florida friends were telling me how great a job Florida is and that all those coaches you mentioned would pick Florida over Tennessee (to try and rub salt in my wounds). I explained to them that Florida is only hiring one head coach. The conversation ended abruptly.

There are a surprising amount of good options this time. Even if Florida is a better job we aren’t that far behind and we should get a good one if we are smart.

I know we've beat this topic up, but he's averaged about 9 wins a season at MSU. He wouldn't do a better job with more talent and an easier division?

We have discussed it a lot, but he hasn't averaged 9 wins. He has only hit 10 once. He has hit 7 or less four times. But the argument is that he could average 9 in the East with better talent.

I gotcha.

I would prefer Frost, but Mullen has had some great seasons considering the team. 9/10 wins is no small feat there and he's 5-2 in bowl games.

Would be beyond happy if we hired either. I think Mullen would win between 9-11 most years with an eastern division title every third or fourth year. I think a down year for him would be 8-4. Frost would be a little more of a gamble, but if I had my pick, I'd take Frost.

Yeah, I was thinking this earlier. Wasn't the last coach Vandy fired Widenhofer (not counting that interim after Johnson left in August).

Haven't posted in a long time, and really only add something when I hear something these days. You can check my stats on Butcher having to quit football and Riyahd Jones going to MTSU, really the only time I've ever got info. My dad's a low level booster and hears stuff from time to time. He was in Jimmy Cheek's box for the GA game (honestly not sure if it was Cheek's box or he just happened to be there, and really don't care, also have no idea who else was there), but his understanding after leaving the box and having a lot of cocktails was that Butch was gone, in the minds of the people who mattered by halftime of GA.
I say this to assuage the fears of those that fear we might keep Butch and assure you that the only way Butch is here after this season is if he has naked pictures of Currie. And honestly then I still think he'd be fired because Currie is a stone cold killer that give no f***s.

I trust my dad with my life because that's how I was raised and he absolutely loves Currie and while he wants Butch gone yesterday, believes that if he's still here Currie has a plan/reason to have him here. Take it, leave it, throw it in the toilet. Figured more info is better than less.

My man!

Bruin, I am going to preface this by saying I am not going to argue with you for 10 pages.

1. His defense is young this year, and he has lost a lot to injury and dismissal. Look at development though. TJ Carter, who we recruited, is starting as a true freshman and playing great football.

Maybe they weren't great last year, but you have to play that kind of ball at some G5 schools. He would need to get a high level DC.

2. Riley Ferguson is his recruit, and Norvell is recruiting at the highest level in the school's history. He is playing a lot of young players. Just look at their classes compared to prior ones.

You have to look at these things- can't just make blanket statements.

I’m trying not to be negative, just honest. I don’t think a Gruden type hire could AVERAGE 10 wins a year here. With Alabama not showing any signs of regression, UGA starting to build at a Bama level and Florida’s commitment to getting better. I am afraid UT is looking at a CEILING of 10 wins a year.

Tennessee's ceiling is a national championship. I think if we brought Mullen in here, he would probably average 9 wins a regular season over a few years time.

Playing #1 Bama, losing to Florida, and playing a now elite GA every year our max is probably 9 wins as a program.

But we need new hope. We need an excuse to have unrealistic expectations again. We need something, anything to hype us up.

Serious question: Were they young on defense last year when they were giving up a bunch of points?

I asked with an open mind because I wanted your thoughts after saying you were followed closely.

I wouldn't call RF a recruiting feather in his cap because it isn't a traditional kind of get but I respect your thoughts.

So far this has been one of the best ever. Will see how it finishes out. Both teams are throwing haymakers.

Agreed! 1991 and 2001 are my two favorites. 2011 and last year are up there. But this one is quickly jumping up my list. Been a bunch of fun.
