I think this game will be very similar to Sunday.

42-14

I hope so. I watched the Arkansas State/Montana State game this morning and (granted who they were playing) looked like a very solid football team. Their offense lines up in numerous different packages and are up tempo which will test our young D and the leadership of AJ as the on the field DC. We will see unorthodox four and five wide sets at times which will put Coleman in man coverage which scares the bejeezus out of me. Most of the passes will be quick passes to the outside requiring a DB to shed the block fast in order to make the play....and that's where the game will be won and lost. Against Montana St, ASU was consistently able to make the initial block for the ball carrier to bounce outside or cutback in for long gains. I think ultimately we will be able to make enough plays to win the game, but our inexperience will give up the long play at times. Closer than last week. 30-17 Vols

I think our defense PRACTICES against uptempo?

"In this current era of one and done head coaches at Arkansas State (last three years), the Red Wolves are 0-6 against Power 5 opponents and have been outscored by an average score of 40-16. (GiveHim6.com)"

Auburn - 38-9
Mizzou - 41-19
2012
Oregon - 57-34
Nebraska - 42-13
2011

Illinois - 33-15

Arkansas State vs. Montana State 2014 - YouTube

Just the highlights.... Was a ball game at the half and for most of the 3rd Quarter. Knighten is explosive. They run A LOT of screens. Looked like they were consistently getting pressure against the QB.

I would have Weatherd or JRM as a Spy against him. They also run a lot of Empty sets and when they go trips to either strong/weak side, 70% of the time its a screen.... Either bubble or jailbreak screen. Also, ran a few play action screens.

Lastly, misdirection and end arounds are their bread and butter. They can do a lot of that set. Knighten will usually have 2 options. TE in the flat or a WR running a vertical.

As already mentioned, they are uptempo. Very fast paced. They didn't have a ton of success running it up the gut against Montana St. They just killed them on the perimeter.

Couple other notes on Arky St....

They had 2 fumbles. Lost both. And they had 2 big ST's busts. McKissic fumbled a punt and Montana State recovered at the 5. 1st and goal for Montana St, they would end up punching it in for a TD. Costly error. Then, Montana St was getting ready to punt, faked it, the punter kept it and ran for 25 yards and a 1st down.

Arky St had 294 rushing yards on 48 rushes. Right at 6 ypc. If you take away Knighten's production on the ground and Gordon's 42 yard TD... Here are the remaining stats...

Gordon: 6-26
White: 12-48
Hollingsworth: 5-15
Byner: 3-15
Hogan: 2-31 (End around guy)
Williams: 4-13

As you see, nothing special. Knighten is what makes them go.

That's what I'm most interested in seeing how our defense handles this. Last year, that seemed like our Achilles heel: teams beat us to the corner and were off to the races. Sunday, it appeared we were much improved in that respect. If we can do it again on Saturday, I'm going to feel a whole lot more confident I'm gonna see a competitive football game when I fly out to Norman next week.

Can't afford to miss tackles either. Arky St will try and put you in 1on1 matchups in the flat. And let the offensive guy make a move. Just gotta read his hips and take him down.

I think we'll be ok. I'm more worried about this offense compared to Utah St's offense.

SIAP...looks like our game will not be on TV Saturday. I looked this morning and the Bama game is on SEC network. Penn State or Oklahoma game is on ESPN2.

It will be channel 611-1 on DirecTV (Alternate Channel).

It won't show up on your guide until Saturday.
