Recruiting Forum: UNofficial Utath State Pre-Game Thread

What are your projections for the offensive playmaking; pass and run?

I'll go with 55% running and 45% passing. A sloppy field may bump those a little bit

Is anyone else sick of dag gum hearing we may get beat by USU or it will be a close game? If we get beat there will be absolutely no excuses I would accept. Folks can talk about experience vs. talent, but the drastic lack of talent from USU is too much for me to buy into.

Rivals recruiting rankings

2011 USU #78 UT # 13
2012 USU # 117 UT # 17
2013 USU # 105 UT # 21
2014 USU # 106 UT # 5

Strength of Schedule

2011 USU # 95 (7-6) UT # 12 (5-7)
2012 USU # 97 (11-2) UT # 17 (5-7)
2013 USU # 74 (9-5) UT # 10 (5-7)

I guess the recent success of USU with the assistance of a very weak schedule has folks apprehensive the Vols can win. I will just be happy for Sunday night to finally get here so we can play some football and get after it. I am confident their “luck” of staying close with a big name school will run the hell out on Sunday night. The Vols will score early and often. The Heisman hype will end quickly for Chuckie in Neyland.

I understand we have had roster turnover and those numbers could be deceiving but the talent/speed differences will drastically show up on Sunday night.

Vols win by 23 points.

Go Vols!!!

I agree Vol Sack! There will be a lot of optimism for the future after watching these young players kick snot out of USU on Sunday night. I think we truck stick USU.

This doesn't mean I think we will go through SEC play without our struggles but this USU team is totally over rated and the Vols will have no problems putting this one to bed and turning out the lights.

44-21 the good guys.

For discussion, from ESPN and their SEC picks. FWIW the guys that pick for the SEC all took us to win.

Tennessee vs. Utah St.

Why Tennessee will win: Utah State quarterback Chuckie Keeton can't beat the Vols by himself, can he? Even with UT linebackers A.J. Johnson spying and Curt Maggitt providing some pass rush, Keeton won't be stopped, but he will be contained. Coach Butch Jones says the Volunteers will play as many as 30 freshmen in this one, so there are sure to be mistakes. Tennessee has just enough talent to win a squeaker at home. -- Jeff Barlis

Why Utah State will win: This isn't your typical mid-major opponent. The Aggies won nine games last season despite not having Keeton for the second half of the season. Keeton is back, and this is the perfect game to jump-start his Heisman campaign. Tennessee is still a program on the rise, but with no returning starters up front and up to 30 freshmen expected to play, there are just too many question marks. -- Greg Ostendorf

Yeah i agree. i posted earlier they have 1 safety 2 LBs & 1 dl returning & other than keeton they return 1 ol & 1wr on offense. Thats 7 total returners. I think it could be a blowout but i said 38-20. Their average class talent ranking for the last 4yrs is like 117 & ours 16th nationally. With a rockin crowd they wont know what hit them!

If it rains, we will mud stomp them.

If it doesn't rain, it will just be an average ass whipping.

Those stats don't mean much. compare the players who will be dressing for the game. So many of the players who signed in 2010, 11, and 12 are no longer with the squad. Listing them in the comparison voids those data.

Point taken, but we still have much better players all over the field.

I just checked weather.com and they have Sunday nights rain chances back up to 80%... and instead of scattered thundershowers now just plain thunderstorms. Storm in the gulf giving the front moving in a bit of a boost. Looks like its gonna be one of those play a while and duck for cover games... I'm just excited cause maybe I'll find some decent priced seats on Sunday down on Cumberland now... If not I already bought some hotwings and the couch will do just fine :)

Sure they do, the original rivals stats provide a benchmark and initial comparison. Without going through the roster to dissect who the players, their ranking and ratings are. I think it would be a safe bet to say our team can be no lower than a top 25 recruiting class that will be playing on the field.

That talent is still significant and overcomes the experience factor of the opponents average 98th ranked recruiting class in regards to talent. Mix that in with home opener, under the lights, their strength of schedule and I stick to my prediction of winning by 23.

Not worried here. Typically D is further ahead of the O at the beginning of a season. We finally have speed at the edges for containment. We sorely lacked that last year.

Our D will turn Chuckie Keeton into Chuckie E Cheese.

South Carolina disagrees , nice touch with the Chuckie cheese

The forecast I saw on the news said that most of the rain will come Saturday night. Then they showed the radar and it showed no rain. So who knows. Hubby and I purchased 2 ponchos this evening while we were out. Good investment. Whole lot cheaper at the mall than if u were to purchase them at the game.

Are umbrellas allowed in the stadium? If not my girls and I will need to get ponchos. Only about 14 hours until I am headed south to K-Town!

They're allowed in the stadium, just not allowed to open them. Doesn't make any sense to me but that's what I heard.

So you can use them as clubs but not to keep dry. Got it. :) Thanks. Looks like we will be shopping for ponchos Sunday morning.

Thanks for the heads up. We will look into that. :hi:

I am SO ready for this game! I've been driving around with Rocky Top on repeat in my vehicle. Can't wait to be there!
