Recruiting strategy

General pattern has been that our higher rated prospects, or ones with more potential, picked up offers after receiving a vol offer or committing to the vols. But I agree, we haven't really had to battle for anyone. Arnett, Clear, Richardson, and Wright will be a MUCH different story. This is where Dooley and staff can make a name for themselves.

I'll say this, if the staff finds a way to sign Wright, Pagan, & Arnett the noone on this board should be questioning their ability to recruit!

I'm looking for examples.

Dooley will also probably win the battle for Couch, Arnett, Richardson, Clear, and Wright.

Here I thought I was dealing with all the "recruiting experts" who like to explain to everyone how only they know recruiting (usually while predicting over-the-top finishes and excessive expectations of our recruits compared to others). But here you go:

Are you really that dumb? Do you know how many schools offer about 90-100+ players? Guess what it will end up the same for every team of getting 25-28 of the players offered. You cannot be this dumb.

Wonder what this guy thinks about Dooley wanting Tino Thomas over Countess and Walls? And Kerbyson over the 4 star kid from Delaware?

Countess, Walls, and that kid from Delaware (forgot his name) would be Vols right now and our ranking would be in the top 15 but Dooley felt like Tino and Kerbyson were better.

Trip Thurman?

Sounded like a real prima donna to me

Yeah... but if Dooley had wanted him he could've gotten him. He grew up a Vol fan yet Dooley never offered because he liked Kerbyson and Posey better.

I agree that Dooley could have gotten Thurman.

I just remember how it was reported that Thurman acted like a brat when he felt snubbed by Dooley & staff during an unscheduled visit down for the Orange & White game.

Lots of drama....last thing we need around here imo

Yeah, going 5-for-95 in 4/5* targets is some success.

Please don't be foolish. Not even the most elite programs can land the majority of four- and five-star players. Even if they do, how will those players who are already good become GREAT without top-notch coaching and discipline?

Agree I mean we didn't beat anybody for Kerbyson or AJ Johnson. We also didn't beat anyone for Worley, Smith (has a UF offer now), Dallas, Martin, and Posey.

Some guys like to hear themselves talk because they think by talking it makes them a guru when in reality they just prove their ignorance.

Remember that old ESPN article that said Worley's top suitors were LSU and Notre Dame and then "surprisingly" haha picked UT? AJ is still being actively recruited by Florida. How are those not somebody significant we beat for these commits?

So, here's the "genius" insight of the "insiders" here:

1. We didn't really "want" any of the 95 4/5* players missed out on; we really only "wanted" the 3* guys we typically didn't have recruiting competition for;
2. We have Juda Paker higher on our board than Clowney, because, dude, he's just that much better and no one knows it;
3. All the 4/5* recruits who said no thanks are actually talent-less players who everyone in the country has missed out on (even all the ones we offered) because the "experts" on here "know" better.

What a complete joke.

You cannot be that dumb to claim that a success rate of landing 2 4/5* players out of 90+ offered is a great recruiting outcome. No, you don't get everybody; but landing only 2 of your top 90 targets is getting whipped by your SEC competition.

Here's a little comparison for you, since you're obviously not knowledgable enough to know otherwise:

# of Top 250 Players
Dooley
Offered: 95
Committed: 2
Considering: 6

Saban
Offered: 91
Committed: 9
Considering: 15

(Math Aid to Volnation Recruiting "Experts" -- 9 out of 91 is better than 2 out of 95)

You're wrong. And that's the problem.

Commitment Rate of Top 250 Amongst Those Offered
Saban 2010: 16%
Saban 2009: 20%
Saban 2008: 24%
Meyer 2010: 24%
Meyer 2009: 17%
Meyer 2008: 18%

Dooley is currently around 2% and will likely finish around 4%; that's the problem.

It's easy to understand why people choose to ignore data when it stacks up against you like this. :(

I'm interested in seeing some cogent responses to this data since everyone asked.

The problem is the crap pile Dooley was left...can you blame any of these uncommited recruits for being hesistant?

Dooley has his back against the wall in so many ways it's ridiculous...and yet you expect him to pull the same guys that two of the most successful coaches at two of the hottest programs in the country are pulling...do you have any idea how unreasonable that is?

Dooley is filling needs with quality players...several of which (Kerbyson, Smith, Randolph, Coleman, Dallas, Worley, Williams) are believed to be underrated by several people...and he's also setting us up for a great finish with several 4*'s....

Do me a favor...if you don't have a Rivals subscription use the 7 day free trial and go compare the films for the following players...

Kerbyson to Trip Thurman
Coleman to Jonathan Aiken
Randolph to Avery Walls
Smith to Devonta Freeman
Dallas to Terell Chestnut
Williams to Corey Marshall

Can you say with absolute certainty that any of the players on the right are significantly better than the UT commit on the left that I've compared them to?

Would your opinion of Dooley and our current class really be differant if Rivals gave these borderline 4* commits the 0.1 or 0.2 points they need for that irreplaceable and irrefutable 4th star?

You're calling this current class horrible and our coach a terrible recruiter because a bunch of guys who mostly have never played college football have made a subjective decision to not put an extra star next to those players names

But I'm sure I just wasted alot of my time and effort...neither one of us are going to change the other ones opinion on this
