Recruiting Swings and Misses

I'm fairly new to the recruiting world. Who are the biggest names that UT had a legitimate shot at landing that went to another school and had good success? I know people have mentioned Taj Boyd, and I wondered who else might have worn the real orange?

Just thought it might be an interesting conversation.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Carl Lawson yet. That one stung

The OP included "with good success".

I didnt mention him because I dont think its been long enough to determine his success. Same reason I havent mention Vonn Bell or EJ Levenberry

Randall Cobb and Jordan Matthews..............All we had to do was pick up the phone

I have been following recruiting for a while now, and I had never heard of Jordan Matthews until he got to Vandy. If you look at his offer list, he just overachieved. No one else thought about him either.

Now, Randall Cobb, that is another story.

Randall didn't come here because he wanted to be a QB. Fulmer told him he wanted him to be a WR. KY told him they wanted him at QB and then switched him to WR after he got there.

I also think Fulmer came in too late. If I remember correctly, we waited on an offer. Even with the position situation, if we had offered sooner, we might have gotten him.

UT never showing him any attention until Saban showed up at his school might have had something to do with that.

You would certainly know more than me with your proximity, but I hardly ever remember hearing about UT with his recruitment. It was the end of Fulmer's era when he was not as aggressive in recruiting. Plus, Hightower was a perfect fit for the 3-4. Probably would have been a DE in our system. As the title was "swing and misses," I am just not sure that he was considered much of a "swing."

Tennessee offered. David Cutcliffe and Steve Caldwell oversaw his recruitment.
