Recruiting ?

Give it about 10 years and see how that is remember in Vol history.
UT would have been better off to just not field a team for a couple of years.

I don't think there is an infatuation with Dooley. It is just a reality for UT football history. Three wretched years that we'd prefer to wipe from our memories. But it's like a car crash. you can't help but look back to see the carnage. I think for many, you just can't believe that anything could be that bad.

Its safe to say that in 10, 15, or 20 years when they show "highlights" of great Vols and spectacular plays on the video board at Neyland, none of them will be from 2010 to 2012.

I would be nice to get off of other team's highlight reels.

He recruited a few good WR but that's about it. And Hammy actually gave Dooley a contract extension after the first year.

nobody else would take the job if I remember correctly.

What I remember is that the dooley hire was an act of panic. Something about saving the recruiting class, which I believe Kippy as an interim HC could have done.

Either way, I couldn't be happier with Coach Jones and staff's recruiting efforts. They are putting in work!

If you are still sitting around wondering about Derek Dooley, I feel pretty bad for you. How long do you think it will take before you're able to let it go?

:eek:lol:

We have some here that aren't over the coach Majors/Fulmer thing in 92. Heck...we still have a few that would punch coach Dickey over leaving us for fl in the early 70's.

Comparatively this wound is still bleeding.

What in the world was the previous staff doing? I didn't really keep up much on recruiting until recently. So I didn't really think much about not having verbal commits this early.

When Dooley started to look lost while on the side lines and the fans began to complain about him, it became obvious that he was not the long term answer.
So, other programs began to "negative recruit" against us.
Think about it. By the time, us fans, find out about some juicy news about the future of our program, many in the S.E.C. coaching circles knew about it.
So, that explains why we were losing players to Auburn, Arkansas, Michigan State, etc. etc.
I would say that mid-way thru Dooley's second season, it was obvious that he was not the long term answer and the rumors started to swirl around the S.E.C. coaching circles.

How many coaches, that are no longer employed by UT, are they still paying some part of their salary?

"Tennessee will have to pay Dooley roughly $5 million to buyout the remainder of his contract. The payments are due in installments of roughly $102,040 per month through December 2016." (Tennessee fires Derek Dooley - GoVolsXtra Story)

This would be the absolute earliest it could happen.

I agree, with the exception of Cordarrelle Patterson. No way that guy is forgotten.

No, perhaps who Hamilton initially targeted wouldn't take it, but if the jackass had done his due diligence, he could've found an up and coming coordinator or promising lower level head coach that had more bonafides than the .410 winning percentage and 2 out of 3 losing seasons that Dooley brought with him from La Tech.

I just can't seem to get my brain around the notion that Hammy concluded nobody else more qualified than Dooley was available after Kiffin's departure.

It's all Muschamp's fault, he was the one who told Hammy to go talk to Dooley. Blame Muschamp!!!

Dooley was terrible.

I sometimes wonder if he was self-sabotaging to get his buyout. Dead serious.

He just wasn't a good coach. His Sal hire was a complete train wreck. Both if them were over their heads. I got to hand it to him tho, he sure pulled Hammy's shirt over his head and beat him hockey style on that contract. Dools isn't stupid(law degree) but he sucks as a coach and a man. I now have to see him here in Dallas on the sideline but I laugh everytime Dez Bryant rips his azz.

I've sort of moved past hating on Dooley. I am much more angry at Hamilton for hiring someone that clearly was not ready for this Job. I can't blame the man for seizing the opportunity given to him, much like many of the "diamond in the rough" players that we gave scholarships to during the Dooley era. Can't blame them for taking them.

Despite Dooley's win/loss record and complete ineptness in recruiting, I'm at least thankful to him for a couple of things..

1.) Establishing the VFL program. I think that was a great idea and I honestly do believe it benefits the players greatly.

2.) His input on the design of the Anderson Training Center. That place is a palace and believe it or not, Dooley had a lot of input in the way it's designed. Now it's a huge recruiting tool for us.

^ Of which he is not, nor ever will be a member.
