Reports saying Bernard King elected to HOF

I do remember him. I was a high schooler in the mid 70's and several times I had the good fortune to get to see him play in person in Knoxville. Speaking of future NBA greats, I got the oppourtunity to see him play as a sophomore in the finals of the "Volunteer Classic" against Clemson and "Tree" Rollins (UT won).

He was not just the best player I ever saw play for UT, he was the best player I ever saw play in the SEC. Oh, and by the way, for those who are too young to know, he was better than Wayne Chism, Chris Lofton, Scotty Hopson, Dane Bradshaw, "Swiperboy", or anyone else of recent vintage to wear orange.:twocents:

Right there with you. I was in HS in the 70's and BK is by far and away the best ever to wear the orange and probably the best ever to play in the SEC. Probably will never be another one like him.

A lot of you won't be aware that Spencer Haywood signed with the Vols back when Ray Mears was coach. As I recall, he had academic problems and ended up somewhere else. Someone on the team told me that he used to practice with Spencer. One of Spencer's warmup routines was to jump high enough to lay a quarter on top of the backboard, and then retrieve it. He ended up being a great player.

He's not just the best player ever to play at UT; he's the best player in the history of the Southeastern Conference.

(Anyone who's thinking about Maravich needs to go look up how many shots that guy took a game, and compare his FG % to King's.)

Maravich was as good as Marshal henderson thinks he is. I love King, but I give the nod to Maravich as best SEC player, and to not at least mention Shaq as well would be a disgrace to how good the SEC has been historically (and of course Barkley too, but Shaq was on a whole other level).

This sounds like a good around the NCAA discussion, best player in each conference historically. I think we'd need to do before the 3 point line and after though, or the shot clock whichever we deem more an enormous change to the game.

Had the quickest release on a jump shot I have yet to see and could rebound like Moses Malone at only 6'7".

Please don't compare a softball player to Bernard King.

Don't compare someone who was almost unanimously the most dominant player at her position, arguably at any position, in her sport with someone who was possibly the greatest player in his conference (though even that is undecided really?) Just because you don't like the women's sports doesn't make them less critical or comparable. Might as well not compare Pat to any of the great coaches of all time.

And yes Candace having two titles and being the lebron james so far of women's ball (playing any position) makes her in this conversation, too.

But I'd still give it to Peyton.

On a level playing field, Abbott was by far the most dominant athlete at his/her sport to ever wear the orange and white. To say King was the most dominant of all sports is flat out wrong, as I proved. Now, for the 3 major sports, men's sports, etc, then you may be on to something. Otherwise, not at all.

Monica Abbott and her 139-29 record, 0.82 ERA, 1716 Ks, opp .138 batting average, and 20 walks for her career say hello.

Oh, and those numbers were just through her junior year. After her senior year it was 189-34 (.848 winning percentage), 0.79 ERA, 2440 Ks, 23 no hitters, 6 perfect games, and 112 shutouts. That's pure domination.

About time. Without the injuries, Bernard King would have been top 10 in NBA history. Was he not the comeback player of the year twice? If not the best ever in the S.E.C. then at worst #2. An argument for Pistol Pete or B.K. can be made from many angles.
I saw Pete play many times against U.T. and we held him to about 20 pts. per game. He carried L.S.U. single-handed and was a magician with the ball [check out his youtube videos]. However, B.K. was absolutely indefensible on offense and a terror on the boards.
I'm a Tenn. fan and biased, but my vote goes to Bernard King as the best to play in the S.E.C. Shaq is not in the discussion. Ky. has had many very good players: Dan Issel, Jack Givens, Pat Riley, Rick Robey, Sam Bowie, Melvin Turbin, Jamaal Mashburn, and many more; none were the caliber of Bernard King. He was the best I've ever seen in person.
Congrats to Bernard King.
Way overdue!!

Bill Simmons made this point in a podcast a few weeks ago. with as many Mcdonald's AA's as KY gets and high recruiting, how do they not have even one guy who you could even argue is a player of a generation/NBA perennial all star? Yes, Wall and Cousins are good right now, Davis probably will be, but none of those guys, at this rate, will go down as a top 20 of all time player even. How can a school pull in the talent they have and not get one guy like larry, michael, magic, tim duncan, etc. hell, even syracuse got Melo and memphis got D rose at least, and even they won't go down as all time greats without a lot more work and the sudden death of Lebron or Durant.

King was a great player, no doubt...but this is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. Michael Jordan, Bill Russell, Bird, Magic, Kareem, Wilt, Tim Duncan, Kobe Bryant, Shaq, Olajuwon - maybe that's not the top 10, but those 10 people exist, and King would have to be better than at least one of them. No chance.
