Rest In Peace

John Robinson
coach at USC and at the Rams

He beat TN in 1980 and 1981 with Marcus Allen. TN played a close game in 1980 at Neyland and got destroyed a year later at USC.

I didn’t realize that Robinson was still alive. Odd that he died in Baton Rouge instead of California. Maybe he was a tax exile. He was a consultant for Ogeron a couple of years ago.

I was there for the 1980 game against USC. Ronnie Lott was also on that team.

One week after Herschel Walker’s debut when he ran over Bill Bates and Larry Munson then had to change his shorts.

It was weird how 1980 started with such close games at home versus GA (15-16) and USCw (17-20) and then a year later at Athens and Los Angeles UT got pounded by a combined 87-7.

If that happened in 2024, Majors would have been fired before the 3rd game...

But in 1981 TN had been struggling for nearly a decade just to get invited to ANY bowl game. Majors raised the bar making TN a regular participant on New Years Day. Despite the rough start, 1981 was arguably when TN finally turned the corner. The Garden State Bowl win over Wisconsin to close out the 1981 season was a big deal at the time.

I was more making point about how things are different now than early 80s...
