Retire Chism's Jersey?

I know you're getting that from that list of requirements but what the hell does his NBA career have to do with being honored here? He is the winningest player in history and bleeds orange. I say retire Loftons next season and Wayne's down the road.

Oh, I completely agree. I think they should make an exception for these guys.

Since Ernie and Bernie just recently had their jerseys retired I say UT needs to wait about 10-15 years to see how Chism's records hold up. If it is just based upon his numbers in my opinion they are not good enough, but if you look at where UT is as wins are concerned he deserves to eb recognized. I believe Chism and Lofton have set the foundation for future success and will help cement UT basketball among the contenders for years to come.

You could always retire the headband though.

I am completely against retiting a player's jersey until they are retired from the game. Ernie, Bernie & Allan I was totally for. Whether Wayne deserves it down the road is a good question. I love the guy, but I just don't think he was at that level.

I think in order to have your numnber retired you needed to pretty much dominate your sport for 4, or atleat a minimum of 3, years and you need to win championships. IMO there has never been a UT player reach this level of sucess. Especially Wayne Chism. With that said I love Wayne and he's easily on my list of top 5 favorite Vols but he no where near accomplished enough to have his jersey retired.

No. Hes a good player and bleeds orange but he's not jersey retiring material. He only averaged what like 13 and 7 his senior year? Think of who else has it retired Ernie Grunfield and Bernard King who averaged 27 and 10 as a freshman. The next to be retired has to be Allan Houston or Chris Lofton.

Chris Lofton nearly meets two of the requirements, plus the testicular cancer, I fully expect his number to be retired.

I love Chism but there is no way he will have his jersey retired. Dale Ellis will be the next. He is arguably the second best player in UT history behind Bernard King.

Just so some of you youngsters know, there was some quality basketball played LONG before Bruce Pearl was thought of. As good as the Pearl era has been, there hasn't been a single player on one of Pearl's squads who would make UT's all time starting five. It is what it is guys

Chism is an unforgettable Vol simply based on his career numbers, and not just stats, but records like having the most career games played. I think nowadays, people throw around the notion of retiring jerseys all too often. A jersey retirement should be, in my opinion, reserved for few players. I love Chism's determination and grit during his time at Tennessee. Everyone knows he gave his all, and his play helped elevate this program along with Pearl's guidance. But retiring Chism's jersey seems slightly premature, considering the great who preceded him. Because as "truefan" said, quality basketball has been played way before Pearl or Chism arrived here.

I agree completely. Chism was a very good player and will be greatly missed. However, retirement of the jersey should be confined to players such as King and Grundfield. Chism never made all american, never lead the league in scoring, rebounding, or any other statistical category. If we retire his jersey, we are setting a standard that most every player who stays four years and plays as a freshman could be considered to have their jersey retired. We would soon run out of jerseys.

which 2? According to utsports.com he meets only 1. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't see it (and my posts should not ever been seen as trying to slight what these players did at UT)

I said nearly because he was a two-time second team All-American and a preseason first team All-American (instead of first team All-American) at which point he was hiding his diagnosis of testicular cancer. There are always exceptions to the rule, and I feel pretty confident testicular cancer qualifies.
