Edward Snowden claims FBI may have started file on overnight sensation Oliver Anthony after his hit Rich Men North of Richmond stormed the charts to number one - similar to how it had a file on John Denver for attending one anti-war protest
Whistleblower Edward Snowden has warned that the FBI may have started a file on singer Oliver Anthony after he shot to fame with his anti-elite song.
The working-class anthem's message has hit home with many, rising to No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Snowden, who became a household name after leaking highly classified information from the National Security Agency in 2013, has warned the attention and reactionary message of his music will make Anthony a focus for the FBI.
'After hitting topping the iTunes list and tweeting like this, the FBI will be making space for him another kind of list, too' Snowden wrote on his Twitter account.
'Think I'm kidding? The FBI had a file on John Denver for attending *one* anti-war protest.
'They're gonna keep making lists — until they're made to stop' he added.
Anthony has tweeted posts such as: 'You weren't born to just pay bills and die'.
He has also hit back at the use of his song in a political context.
John Denver, as mentioned in Snowden's post, had a file opened him after appearing at an anti-war rally in 1971
