Richt leaving UGA?

Everyone keeps talking like Kirby Smart is an automatic at Georgia if Richt leaves. I understand the name popping up, but Georgia isn't just some chance to prove you can be a HC. Georgia is an elite program. Not sure they would just hand over the reigns to a guy who has never had a chance at HC anywhere. Especially since there is a common denominator for all of Saban's great defenses. Saban.

It happens, even at big schools...see the Zooker.

If Tennessee would hand the reigns over to a 17-20 coach, I have no trouble believing that Georgia would hand it over to Smart.

The only way the two situation could be similar is if Smart were hired and then left after a year and left the program on fire when doing so.

The two situations are light years apart. But I still don't buy that Richt is leaving.

The only explanation would be that A&M threw a crazy number out there.

Always best to leave on a high note.

His last few years in Athens have been shaky. If not for that trip to Atlanta, aided by a favorable conference schedule, he may not have been given the chance to return in 2012. Maybe he knows how quickly the seat can begin to warm again in Athens and wants to leave on his own terms.

Two different situations. Georgia is loaded. Tenn was a dumpster fire that no one had the balls to take except for Dooley.

Plus everytime a mistake like Zook is made, it makes schools more hesitant to take a chance on someone like that. I could see Georgia going after Chris Peterson before I could see them going after Kirby Smart.

Yes, that is true. However, my point remains that even the most proven of programs sometimes hand the keys over to guys that are less than proven.

And I don't buy it either.

This. He can just parlay his situation into another guaranteed 4 or 5 years at another SEC school with fertile recruiting grounds surrounding it.

There are plenty of rumors out that state that Richt has lost control of the team, mainly Crowell running amuck.

This. He had to run the table to calm the natives.

Isn't that what they did with Richt?

Fair point, but it still isn't exactly the same. EVERYONE knows the reason Bama's defense is good because of Saban, not Kirby Smart. I think everyone knew the success of Florida State's offense was due to Richt.

Come on guys, use the Fulmer chronicles. He just had a job saving year similar to old Phil where he won the east by default. He may have a couple more decent years before the wheels start coming off again and all the little ga fans start yelling " fire Richt" again. However with their schedule next year and recruiting they may not have near the fallout that we have had.

UGA lost to ONE eastern division team and the eventual SEC champion in the SECCG. The loss to SC wasn't even comparable to some of the epic 2nd half collapse that Fulmer was famous for, especially in 2007.

When CPF was in the similar situation, he was taken to the woodshed against a 6-7 Alabama team and a 9-4 Florida team and then beaten by LSU.

Or the elite talent that FSU had back then?

Only sec school in a talent rich state vs. fighting ut, uf, usc, bama, clemson & ga tech for recruits. There are some advantages.

Winning by default =/= Winning in a weak division

The idea of him knowing his seat could get real warm soon and him wanting to get out of there before Georgia makes him get out does make sense in theory.

E: Pay no mind to my error. Brain fart.
