Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

Lol, this is why Barnes will be at TN for years and the Basketball Team will continue to have the same type of seasons.

I’m not sure why a fan base who went through Wade Houston, Kevin O’Neill, Buzz Peterson, Cuonzo Martin, and Donnie Tyndall does this to themselves. That’s a combined 16 years out of the last 33 years. Half of the time. Jerry Green was ok with good talent.

I will take these seasons all day, every day. We did something last year that I hadn’t seen in my 43 years. How soon people forget.

Just love it. Whether it be football, basketball, women's basketball, and eventually baseball, same old grumblers crawl out ready to fire a good coach. Putting together good teams every year with the hopes that you can pull off the big one here and there is what any reasonable fan base should hope for. Expectations beyond that lead to misery. Annually having top ten to 15 teams is a tall task. I'm glad we have Barnes.

But it’s not due to performance on the court. They didn’t fire Shaka and Beard would’ve won at least at Barnes level. They’ve been a 1-2 round exit for the last 10 years regardless of coach.
Shaka was to them was Cuonzo was to us. They didn’t technically fire him but they were done with him. That’s why he left for Marquette. They probably would’ve fired him if he hadn’t gotten that job.

Yeah he definitely reset his clock and got out ahead of it. But his statement acting like they’re on their 3rd coach because of aimlessly wandering through the desert is patently wrong. Shaka just wasn’t any better than what they got rid of. That university grossly overestimates their place and their perceived place of where they should be when it comes to basketball.

They missed more tournaments under Smart in 6 years than Barnes did in 17 years. Smart had a season that was 11-22. Barnes didn’t do that at UT inheriting a mess.

I do find their results ironic. The fact that Beard did it to himself still counts. Same thing with Pearl.

Am I upset yes ,but mad , NO! One thing I don’t understand is how we can keep cranking up the 3 ball when you are 3-21 today. It’s basketball, take the LOSS and move on .

Yes. But I also think the people who want to push Barnes out of here are guilty of the same thing.

Nobody should want Barnes fired, but anytime we lose to Kentucky the crazies come out. It’s nice being a top 15-20 program. For Tennessee is perfectly acceptable and it’s really nice to have good, consistent basketball. The offense is just always gonna be like this with what Barnes run. It is what it is.
You never give up on that offense spiel. How many times you going to repeat that over and over and over again?

Even more incredible what Barnes did- doubling their NCAAT appearances.

Barnes Coaching in Basketball, is like Richt Coached in Football. He’ll win enough regular season games to be in the top 15 year in and year out. Currently, it appears this is good enough to be the Head Basketball Coach at TN. He’ll always lose a few games he shouldn’t and will never do well in the Big Tourney.

Chris Lofton deserved a better effort today…..really a Dang shame.
Ignorance is bliss.

This is one you can not put on Barnes. He had his team prepared and ready to play. This one is on the players and , to some degree, the refs. A number of players missed at least 6 lay ups in the final 6 minutes of the game. They missed wide open threes all day long. The players had way too many turn overs. The coaches did their job. The players didn’t. Olivier looked like he was eating lunch and taking a nap. Uris was the only -layer who wanted to play and he almost played hard enough to win it. Phillips was out of position all afternoon and was pushed all over the court.
Barnes even called time outs to try to get the players to play like they have been coached. The players must have read the headlines and thought they could show up on the court and the game was over. Maybe, they learned a lesson today and will remember it the rest of the season. Barnes and his staff can not play the games The players have to do that and they failed today.
