Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

I’ve seen 9 Vol basketball coaches in my life.
2 have been great, one was ok , the rest were garbage. (Well, Tyndall is a very good coach but his hire was a disaster that could and should have been avoided). I’ll stick with 1 if the great ones. Coaching searches are crap shoots, and we’ve seen enough of them here to know. Barnes isn’t above criticism, some is fair, but I m glad he’s our coach.

MJ’s former roommate, as he always made sure to remind everyone he was lol, got good players here. If he could coach at even an average level, he might still be our coach, tbh

IMO he should have made the NCAAT at least 2 times if not 3 of the 4 years with the players he had.

People said he was a “safe” hire and he would “stabilize the program” but he’s done way more than that. Tournament results aside he has one of the best coaching careers in Tennessee history. It really is incredible. We were just so lucky that he fell right into our laps. I’m proud to have Rick Barnes as the leader of our basketball program, and he is one of the best coaches in Tennessee history like I said.

Barnes has upgraded the talent level since his arrival in 2015 and he will break the glass ceiling and lead Tennessee to a Final Four appearance before he retires.

Barnes did exactly what I think most reasonable fans expected. Maybe slightly surpassed. The #1 ranking, 4-5 star recruiting was nice. However, Barnes has always had a ceiling in the postseason. Me personally? I am 1000000% fine with that. I’d much rather have his record here knowing how likely the season ends in the tourney than rolling dice on someone else. The one downside with Barnes was his shelf life here. I truly thought he would be 5-7 years here to end his career rebuilding a P5 program but he has done more than that.

The ONE THING that has me thinking the end is near is how more engaged and active he is on the sidelines. This is likely his deepest and best Tennessee team he’s had anytime here. This team could likely be his last “best chance” to make a run at another final four. Seems like he knows that hence why he’s much more noticeably active on the sidelines.

I enjoy watching him on the sidelines. Almost everytime a player leaves the court he is on them. And don’t talk back. You will get it worse.

He's only done it once before in 35 years as a head coach, so that would be quite the accomplishment for him.
