Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

He is the Marc Richt of basketball. Good seasons but not when it counts. I doubt this team makes the sweet 16. Just glad I am more of a football fan! Good bye!!!!

I compared Rick Barnes to Phillip Rivers. Good to great but never considered elite. Probably makes the HOF due to being consistently good for a long time, but never thought to truly be in that upper echelon. Never won anything of merit.

You clowns blaming Barnes for every loss. I’ve yet to come in here and see you same idiots giving him any credit for 19 non-losses. Obviously Barnes told Z to make a stupid foul and Vescovi to miss that free throw. And I think many of you think he willed that game winning shot to go in. 🤡 🤡🤡

Tennessee is in a better spot than they have ever been regarding basketball status. We are an attractive spot to a lot of coaches now as of now. Before we wasn’t but times have changed. Barnes got us 3/4 of the way there but we need someone else to get us to the top. We can do that. We can hire an elite basketball coach at Tennessee now. Will we? Do I know the names off the top of my head now. No so don’t ask.

Hate to break it to you but there’s only a handful of elite coaches out there.

Most likely it’ll be an up & comer.

Barnes' teams had offense issues even at Texas...as a fan base we knew what were getting.

I love Barnes and what he has done for Tennessee basketball. At the end of the day, he'll go in the books as one of, if not the best, coach to roam the sidelines of TBA.

That said, I think it's time for the ol' gentleman to hang up the whistle and let Tennessee basketball grow and take that next step.
Agreed, he’s taken up the mountain higher than any other coaches and paved the way as he’s climbed. That being said we need someone else to get us to the top of the mountain, and we need to act sooner then later before we start backtracking.

Tonight is not on Barnes. His decision to go small and finally take ON off the floor for the majority of the Second half is the only reason we even had a shot at the end.

ZZ cost his team big time tonight with the stupid foul, and Santi again chokes down the stretch. If you want to blame someone blame them. But tonight wasn't on Barnes.
Just curious why the $6 million coach hasn't coached them up. Team plays like they are coached. If it's coaching when they win then it's coaching when they lose. You cannot have it both ways.

So you are being forced to watch ?
No, but when we suck again (like Wade Houston years), I won’t watch and will barely keep track. I’m getting too old to waste my time and run up my heart rate.

And before you retort with sanctimonious “true fan” BS, I grew up in Knoxville, graduated from UT and I’m a donor.

I wish Barnes didn’t have to constantly overcome the failures of the players he’s paid to recruit and develop

I wish we didn’t have so many “fans” who come out of the woodwork after losses to lob criticism grenades because they thrive on negativity, but we don’t always get what we want.

What temperature do you like your Barnes Brand Bathwater? My negavol palate isn’t refined enough to handle that beverage.

Honest question here.. do you think tennessee is a school that could hire or even be attractive to an elite coach now?? I’m just asking bc I think we’ve reached that level but I could be wrong.

Bill Self
Tony Bennett
Tom Izzo
Mark Few
Scott Drew

I’d put those coaches in that elite category.

A good coach tells his players and COACHES them not to have lane violations like that...PREPARES them for end of game situations like that. Fact.
Ok. Because you should have to tell a D1 player not to go into the lane too early. And even if you did, you can’t control their legs. I bet you think they are robots and Barnes controls them.

I trashed Barnes earlier out of frustration but I think he's good coach but has definitely lost a step. I hope he steps aside while the program is still strong. I'm ready for someone to put a premium on scoring points and not just playing great defense.

This was NOT on Barnes. His change to small ball got us back in it.

The bath water army is out tonight to rationalize the loss. It’s never the leader’s fault with these guys and they sit there and lionize the guy who went 100% merc when UCLA came calling. Lucky for them, they got the better deal with his shameless negotiating that somehow doesn’t besmirch his false piety and folksy demeanor.

You’re equating elite strictly with someone coaching at a blue blood who’s not going to leave. You explicitly said “it’ll be an up and comer” as if that negates their ability to be an elite coach.

Ok but if we’re expecting an up & comer to come in and start winning like Nate Oats only to be disappointed with the results, what will be the excuse?
