Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

I get that this thread is basically a venting chamber for fans to come to after losses, but it's so obnoxious to see some of the comments here. Tennessee cannot rationally be upset with a coach like Rick for underwhelming performance. Tennessee is not a blue blood, and plays in an increasingly more difficult conference, and we are basically numb to being a top 5 team. Unreal. (Not to mention a damn fine performance in last years NCAAT, but whatever). I want a Final Four as much as anyone, but I truly believe this is a golden era for Tennessee Basketball. I schedule my nights now around watching us mess around with teams like Norfolk State. That means something.

When the time comes, English is my replacement choice.
I hope Barnes finds a fountain of youth. He's in great shape right now. He still has the intensity to teach. We shouldn't worry about a list of replacements for years. When Barnes leaves, he will no doubt, leave the cupboard fully stocked. Who knows whom might be interested and worthy of the job. Enjoy the success

…amen. 🙏

Solid chance he goes down as the winningest coach in Tennessee basketball history, and yet there are somehow still folks who aren’t happy with him or are ready to move on, truly baffles me.
It really is nonsensical...I can understand those who only want to win the NCAA and complain about not reaching an E8 or FF but to completely ignore our success on and off the court and constantly denigrate CRB is mind boggling and foolish.

CRB only needs an E8 to match Coach Pearl's tourney success at TN and we all know how he is worshipped by most, if not all, of these same posters...it would be such poetic justice if CRB messes around and gets that E8 (or better) this year.

Remember when we were going to miss the tourney, but then Covid cancelled the tournament and kept our veterans around for 2 extra years?

Some of you need to remember that we haven’t been exceptionally great. We’ve had exceptional circumstances.

Exceptional circumstances such as losing Lamonte Turner to injury, Zakai tearing his ACL, Fulkerson getting a blindsided smack to the head, Bone inexplicably leaving early for the draft. Not everything has been as smooth sailing as some may think.

We've been damn good and Barnes is a great coach. Next

Agreed; a lot of Tennessee's success comes from it being the only team provided restructured eligibility under NCAA COVID protocol. Sure-fire tournament teams from that season like Louisville and West Virginia would have obviously outpaced Tennessee if not for these program-specific benefits.

Some Bart Torvik multi-year rankings:

2008-15 (Pearl/Martin/Tyndall): #33
2016-Present (Barnes from day 1): #16
2018-Present (Since he really had his roster in place): #6

This is absolutely nuts. That's a seven-year stretch, even including the COVID year, not at all a small sample size, of Tennessee being the 6th best basketball program in the country. We haven't had a remotely close stretch in the program's history, and that stretch puts us ahead of programs like Kentucky, Arizona, and Michigan State.

Barnes' body of work here is incredible.

I don’t have the words for how bad this is lol

I’m curious. What college team do you really like? If you say Tennessee, then why do you even stick around for all the negativity this team causes you? It’s one thing to have reasonable discussion, but to constantly denigrate all things Tennessee just seems miserable. Tennessee, as all teams do, has their share of shortcomings, but they have way more in the positive column.

Some day, what we have had here the last 7 years is going to turn south a bit, and you are really going to see what reality can look like.

You don’t have to be curious. I am responding to the cool-aid kids who trumpet how Barnes has made every single tournament. I just like to keep things even, and not shoot my mouth off about how awesome something is or how terrible it is.

Some people see facts as inconvenient but keeping it real is always the way to go. That’s how we grow up to be decent humans and not insufferable (the woe is me crowd) or con artists (everything is awesome crowd).

You call me negative? I don’t know what you’re trying to sell, but if it can’t include the truth, then stay out of my space.

What was truthful about your claim that Tennessee has had exceptional circumstances? You also are confusing your opinions as facts

We were not going to be a tournament team in 2020. The tournament was canceled.

The one thing everyone brags about Barnes is that he makes the tournament every year. Where did I lose you?

Barnes had tournament misses at Tennessee, namely before the ‘17 season. Is it likely the Vols would have missed the dance in 2020 without an SEC title game berth (probably claiming the title, to be frank)? Sure. How does that discount what he built, though? Even without the COVID holdovers JJJ and SV, next year is certainly shaping up to be yet another very solid season.

Are you actively rooting for UT to lose its ranked streak next season? If not, just enjoy the unparalleled ride.
