Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

I highly doubt DW even considers him considering his wild behavior wouldn’t be a fit here.

His behavior is off-putting, but he’s had some pretty concerning regular seasons lately. His teams have been playing kind of lazy and undisciplined basketball.

I just don’t think he would be a good fit here.

I can’t imagine why you hate Bruce Pearl so much. Does that have something to do with your thoughts of his sweaty genitalia? Did he break your heart?!

Wait, I guess I did imagine.. You troll!!!
I actually like Pearl. Love how he embraced the history and rejuvenated the program. I was ignorant of his past though. As he became successful at UT his past as a rat came to light. It came back to haunt him in late 2010. Barnes is in a much higher league than him

I would have respect Pearl a lot more if he had just come clean to the NCAA and Mike Hamilton.

The crime was not even that serious but he made it a lot more serious than it needed to be.

He went against orders after the BBQ was reported. Contacted people he was specifically told not contact. Even worse, tried to coerce those people to lie. If it had been the BBQ only, he might still be at UT. Unfortunately for us and him, he's a barking snake. He's a great coach. Questionable character. He might almost equal Barnes as a coach, but he's far behind in character. We're f'ing lucky

Pearl is an excellent one game coach, think about all the big games he’s won only to fall on his face the next.
Barnes coaches a great team, that unfortunately puts him at risk against guys like Pearl who goes all in for one game.

Wish all you folks would leave the little feller alone. He can’t control his behavior. He means well. 😁😁

Excellent post. I always think back to the big win over Memphis in 08, got that shiny new number 1 ranking and then a few days later lost to a crap Vandy team.

Look at the posts calling people “troll” or “ignorant” and ask if the name callers look any different.

In fact, it is because these same name callers have attacked anyone who didn’t agree with them that I felt compelled to argue against them. If that isn’t the definition of troll, then there is no such thing.

But, I can’t imagine choosing to be here if not for the sake of entertainment. It’s a forum based on a subject of entertainment and the folks come here because they are not entertained enough. So carry on with your name calling or contrary arguments. It’s all the same.
Debate and differing opinions are fine...it's why most of us are here. But don't get it twisted, if you make nonsensical statements which basic facts disprove, such as posting we (and no one else) benefited from our veterans being here "for 2 extra years" and that "we haven’t been exceptionally great. We’ve had exceptional circumstances", you are frankly either ignorant of NCAA collegiate basketball or you have an agenda (e.g., to troll).

You are spot on about Pearl's ability to win a big game but I would give him more credit. IMO, no one can take away that Pearl is a great basketball coach...he knows how to assemble teams and get them to play a winning style especially when it matters most. I will always appreciate and enjoy what Pearl did for our program on the court but I cannot ignore what he selfishly did to our program as well as the families of his own staff and the parents of the recruits. Unfortunately, his character flaws which caused these, and other issues from his past, will forever taint his resume.

You might not be a troll, but you very much come across as a contrarian who seems more interested in being right (or trying to be right) than, ya know ... actually enjoying his team's notable and consistent success. I think that's strange.

I loved the Bruce years as much as anybody else. Hell, I drove to St. Louis and got to see the Elite Eight run in person—beating Turner and Ohio State, then losing to Michigan State by a bucket. The end sucked but that tournament will always be one of my favorite sports memories.

That being said, to have such a defeatist attitude when Barnes has the program in as strong of a position as it's ever been is definitely a choice. To see all of those stats that prove definitively how Tennessee has been perhaps the most consistent and successful team in the SEC since he arrived and merely shrug them off shows that you're a bad-faith participant in this "argument." I absolutely want to get back to the Elite Eight and break through to the Final Four, but the fact that Rick hasn't gotten there yet does nothing to invalidate his ongoing success here—and especially because his first time to the Elite Eight will double our school's total trips.

You're not rational—you just like Bruce more, and no concrete evidence will convince you otherwise. It's fine to say that.

Barnes and Pearl are totally different coaches!
Here is how I see it:
Barnes is a high ethics guy, that means he will not recruit some players because of their character regardless of their athletics skill. Bruce loves skills and is willing to let ethics slide in favor of talent.
Barnes is loyal to a fault, you can call that the Christian influence if you would like. Bruce is loyal to himself and a pledge of loyal does not hold as much water as you think, ask his ex.
Barnes does not appear to be a highly motivational guy, I see him more like (Tom) Landry in demeanor, think statistics and reason. [As an aside, he is funny and warm and welcoming and tries and succeeds at inspiring people.] Bruce is of the Vince Lombardi mold, he tries to get that extra effort through motivational speeches, coat slinging, and yelling and screaming. [Think Muschamp. Ugh]
Both are good coaches. Personally, I like Rick Barnes much better. If I had a son (which I don't) I would want them to play for Rick.
Rick is willing to take a chance on developing raw talent over time. Pearl wants the best players he can sign.

My thoughts and 6 bucks will get you a little something tasty at Starbucks.

He should’ve never been allowed back in coaching after what he did as an assistant at Iowa.
