Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

He should’ve never been allowed back in coaching after what he did as an assistant at Iowa.
I don't think it was a big deal. Certainly he could never get hired at Tennessee after lying to his boss about NCAA compliance. As complicated as NCAA rules are, what did him in at Tennessee wasn't any of that but lying and misleading his own bosses. I can't think of a business where that won't get you canned.

I’m honestly searching for something to be critical of. I thought that Gainey had too much of a green light when his production went down. Well, now his minutes have dropped. Should the offense be faster? It’s hard to argue with the scheme when lots of assists are being logged - it’s maybe not fast paced, but sharing the ball is a good concept. Pulling players after bad mistakes? The offenders are rarely benched for long and it’s being consistent to not let the dumb @$$ed things slide. Not playing younger players enough? It’s a new era. They are less likely to not transfer whether they play or not - so why not invest the minutes almost entirely in the current rotation.

He’s not perfect, but he’s as flawless as anybody I could hope for. Maybe I just don’t get triggered by the unusual or different approaches that he takes. Not being demonstrative on the bench. Making them play through and hopefully learn from almost every bad stretch without using time outs. Saving TOs for the end of close games. Leveraging his success into a $5 million deal. Heavily emphasizing defense. It’s all good.

The assists, especially the numbers recently, are indicative of really good movement of the basketball, which is indicative of some pretty good offense as of late.

You want something to complain about? The traffic situation was absolutely horrible. Maybe VolNation can figure out some issues that made my delay getting to TBA Saturday night quite the nightmare.

Fahr Barnes! I also don’t recall him climbing up on tables in the cafeteria working the students into a frenzy. And his cheap ass ain’t buying them pizzas either.

But he chokes in the NCAA😫😫
We've been to the tournament 5 times under Barnes, and I think it's reasonable to say we underperformed in 3 of those trips. As has been pointed out ad nauseum, he has done a stellar job in coaching his teams outside of the tournament, and he's proven his early doubters wrong.

Yep, I agree. The way the tournament is set up makes it difficult to have an off night or even a mediocre outing, especially if you run into a hot and hungry mid-major. Should be best 2 of 3 from Sweet 16 through Final Four

I disagree that we underperformed. Two major injuries and one horrific call against Purdue is not underperformance. It’s bad luck. It’s the random nature of the tournament.

Of course you can't fault the Purdue loss on anyone Tennessee. That one guy, not Carson, but the white guy got unconscious from 3. Stepping back against tough D and nailing it.

I wasn't talking about the Purdue game, I was referring to the two mid majors and Michigan. I'm still not a fan of making excuses for losing tournament games; we couldn't stop Cline and put ourselves in a tough position at the end of the game. The team is more responsible for the Purdue loss than anyone else.

Probably one of the greatest disappointments in watching Tennessee basketball all these years. I think the greatest disappointment was losing to Syracuse way back when. That was gut- wrenching. It still stings knowing the talent we had.

I'm assuming you mean Michigan in 2014😊 All joking aside Michigan was playing great coming into the tournament in 2022. Because they were barely over.500 they were seeded 11th. That was BS. No excuse. We got beat. As a number of former players/analysts have suggested, Power 6 teams should never be a double digit seed. Regardless, the NCAA tournament is a crapshoot in it's present form. Lots of hype and excitement, but rarely identifies the best team

Sometimes it’s all about timing. Totally random.

Does Barnes even coach? Serious question. I feel like he just lets them play and if it works great if not, we have nights like this.

We have all seen this for close to a decade in Knoxville, we all know what it means as well…rinse and repeat…good enough to keep you wanting more but not good enough to do anything really special

I usually flat out turn off 5 games a year with Barnes coached teams…this is number 2 this season…right on track Rick! I’m ready for that top 10 season, top 4 seed and bounced in in sweet 16…I’m pumped baby!!!
